Swim and Dive Wins Denison Invitational

GRANVILLE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team won the Denison Invitational with 2,223 points Saturday, Dec. 7. The Eagles claimed eight wins and added 10 times to the program's top-10 performance list on the final day of racing.

Junior Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) made an NCAA 'B' cut in the 1,650 free with a time of 16:27.88. In addition, the time set a new Trumbull Aquatics Center record and landed as the third-fastest time in program history.

Senior divers Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) and Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) met NCAA Diving Qualifying Standards in 3-meter diving. Johnston won both the preliminary and final rounds with scores of 297.70 and 292.20, respectively. Tsafantakis met the standard in the final round, finishing with a mark of 286.45.

In the 200 back, senior Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) won both the preliminaries and finals. Her preliminary time of 1:58.41 and finals-winning time of 1:57.94 rank fifth and fourth all-time in program history, respectively.

Also picking up wins for the Green and White was junior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) in the 200 fly. Adding both her times to the program's top-10 list, her preliminaries time of 2:01.86 is good for 10th all-time, while her finals showing of 2:00.02 lands fourth on the list.

Rounding out the wins for the Eagles was senior Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline) in the 100 free prelims. Also adding her time to the program's all-time performance list, her time of 50.46 sits ninth all-time.

Eastern Michigan will return to competition in the new year, heading to Wayne State University on Jan. 11.
