The total bests last year's five honorees

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday, Dec. 4, that six Eastern Michigan University volleyball players were named to the Academic All-MAC team. That total is the highest for EMU since the 2017 season, when the same number earned the accolade.

Redshirt senior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central), senior Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian), junior April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest), sophomores Julia Fisher (Kailua, Hawaii-Le Jardin Academy) and Mackenzie Garis (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Praire Ridge), and redshirt freshman Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ont.-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) all earned the award.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Haut, earning a spot on the team for the third time, put together an incredible final season for EMU. The Monroe, Mich. native finished third in the league in kills per set (3.43) and second in the conference in points per set (4.15). A five-year member of the EMU volleyball team, Haut finished her EMU career with 1,288 total kills in 125 matches played, and was a major contributor to the program's first-ever Mid-American Conference Tournament championship and berth in the NCAA tournament (2018). Additionally, she was named one of just 30 finalists for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, which is given to the nation's best volleyball student-athlete who exhibits excellence in four key categories: community, classroom, character, and competition.

Schomer earned the nod for the second consecutive season, closing out her impressive collegiate career in 2019. She played in 100 matches as an Eagle, racking up over 850 digs and 160 assists in her career. This season, she took over as the team's libero, and set career-highs in digs, assists, and points.

Houston, a power-hitting middle blocker, battled mid-season adversity to make 18 appearances for the Eagles in their 2019 campaign. She racked up 85 kills, 48 blocks, and 110 points in just 57 sets-played for the Green and White. During the 2018 campaign, she set new career-bests for kills (220), attack percentage (.265), aces (21), digs (65), and total blocks (105).

Fisher emerged in 2019 as one of the team's best frontcourt assets. The Kailua, Hawaii native tallied career-highs in kills (165), total attempts (480), hitting percentage (.200), total blocks (58) and points (198) in her second season at EMU. Her best match of the season came against Navy, where she contributed 16 kills and 18 points, Sept. 14.

Garis became a critical piece of the Eastern Michigan lineup in her second season with the team, setting new career-best marks in sets played (77), assists (42), service aces (17), digs (166), and total points (19.0). The Crystal Lake, Ill. native racked up a career-best 18 single-game assists against Xavier, Aug. 31, and has a personal-best 19 digs against MAC-rival Bowling Green, Oct. 19.

Chase had an explosive first season on the court for EMU after redshirting in her freshman campaign. A powerful frontcourt addition for the Green and White, she made 19 appearances for the club this season. The Toronto native paced the team with a .345 hitting percentage, good for top-five in the league. She added 69 total blocks on the season, and her 1.03 block per set average finished fifth-best in the MAC.

After wrapping up the season, Head Coach Darcy Dorton, along with 13 set-to-return Eagles will be back to work this winter, preparing for the 2020 season, which will begin in late-August, 2020.
