Eastern has three offensive and four defensive players voted all-conference
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — For the fourth consecutive year, the Eastern Michigan University football team saw at least seven of its student-athletes named to All-Mid-American Conference Teams, the league office announced Wednesday, Dec. 4. The seven selections are tied for eighth-most in program history, with the 1995 team also posting the same amount of honorees.
Senior defensive back Vince Calhoun (Middletown, Ohio-Middletown) collected first team honors after garnering third team accolades in 2017 and 2018. He becomes just the seventh student-athlete in program history to collect All-MAC honors in three different seasons. The other Eagles to do it include teammate Brody Hoying (Coldwater, Ohio-Coldwater), defensive lineman Jeremiah Harris (2016-18), kicker Andrew Wellock (2004-06), running back Gary Patton (1985-87), defensive lineman Eric Miller (1985-87) and running back Ricky Calhoun (1981-83).
Senior quarterback Mike Glass III (St. Louis, Mo.-Hazelwood Central-Southwestern College), senior wide receiver Arthur Jackson III (Oakland, Calif.-Wood-American River College), and Hoying were each named to the second team.
In addition, sophomore wide receiver Dylan Drummond (Cleveland, Ohio-Cuyahoga Heights), senior linebacker Kobie Beltram (Antioch, Calif.-Antioch-City College of San Francisco), and senior defensive back Kevin McGill (Waldorf, Md.-Westlake) all garnered All-MAC third team honors.
Calhoun and Hoying were tabbed for the third time, while McGill garnered the honor for the second time in his career. The remaining players each earned the honor for the first time in their careers.
"All individual honors are only possible with help from the rest of the team," said Head Coach Chris Creighton. "Our guys know that, so we celebrate these outstanding accomplishments together as a team. We had some remarkable performances this year and I'm glad that some of our guys are being recognized by the opposing coaches."
Western Michigan led the way in 2019 with six first team selections, followed by Central Michigan and Buffalo with five first team selections. Overall, WMU set the pace with 13 All-MAC selections, followed by UB with 12 and Ball State with 10 honorees. Division champions Central Michigan and Miami each had nine All-MAC nods.
The all-time leader in Eastern Michigan history with 48 career games started, Calhoun moved past 300 in his career with a nine tackle performance against Western Michigan, Oct. 19. He stands at 336 stops, which ranks 12th all-time at EMU. In 2019, Calhoun notched 97 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, two sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception for the EMU defense.
The Middletown, Ohio native ranks ninth in the MAC and 55th in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) with 8.1 tackles per game. He had four games with 10-or-more stops, including a 15 tackle contest in the three-point victory over the University of Illinois, Sept. 14. Furthermore, his 5.5 tackles-for-loss ranks fourth on the team, while his 2.0 sacks is tied for second-best.
In his first year as the primary signal caller for the Eagles, Glass was electric with 3,203 yards of total offense (345 rushing, 2,858 passing) and 29 touchdowns. He led the MAC and ranks 17th nationally in total offense with 291.2 yards per contest. Glass finished the regular season ranked 14th in the FBS in completion percentage (67.8%), 18th in completions per game (21.64), 18th in points responsible for per game (16.0), and 24th in passing yards per game (259.8).
Glass ranks fourth in total offense in a season in EMU's 128-year history and needs just 188 yards to pass Charlie Batch's mark of 3,390 that has stood since 1997. Also, Glass is 422 yards away from moving past Batch for the most passing yards in a single-season, while he needs two touchdown passes to surpass the two-time Super Bowl Champion's mark of 23 set in 1997. He is also just 23 passes short of tying Andy Schmitt for the most passes completed in a single year with 261.
Jackson led the pass-heavy offense with the 20th-most yards receiving in a single-season at EMU. The Oakland, Calif. product had 679 yards receiving on 39 catches in 2019. Overall, he notched six touchdowns on the year to rank ninth-most in a single campaign. Additionally, his 17.41 yards per reception ranks fifth in the league and 47th in the NCAA. On senior day, Jackson tallied his first career 100-yard receiving contest when he hauled in four balls for 129 yards against Kent State, Nov. 29.
In two seasons at EMU, Jackson has 85 receptions for 1,271 yards and 11 TDs. His 11-career receiving scores tied for seventh all-time at EMU, while he joined teammate Mathew Sexton (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) as just the 30th player in program history to accumulate 1,000-or-more yards receiving.
Hoying joins the All-MAC second team after earning first team accolades in 2017 and third team honors in 2018. He has been a vital part of the team's defensive resurgence the last four seasons. Hoying has 247 tackles, 19.0 TFLs, 16 pass deflections, seven forced fumbles, and six interceptions in 47 career games.
Currently ranked second in the MAC and 14th nationally in interceptions, Hoying had five games in 2019 with seven-or-more tackles. He finished the regular season fifth on the squad with four TFLs and tied for the lead in pass breakups with five. Hoying had a two-interception day against Northern Illinois, Nov. 19, to become the first Eagle to collect two picks in a game since DaQuan Pace did so against Ball State, Nov. 8, 2016.
Drummond burst onto the scene in 2019 with a team-high 51 receptions for 483 yards and three touchdowns. He had at least one catch in every game, including a career-best eight catch performance in an victory over Western Michigan, Oct. 19. His 4.3 receptions per game ranked sixth in the MAC and 109th nationally. Meanwhile, he was also the primary punt and kick returner ranking 75th in the FBS with 331 yards.
Beltram stepped into the starting linebacker role in 2019 and led the Eagles with 116 tackles. His 9.7 tackles per game is good for fifth in the conference and 17th in the NCAA, while he is just the fifth EMU defender to total 100-more tackles in a season since 2010.
Against Northern Illinois, Nov. 19, Beltram led the defense effort with a team-high 10 stops, two TFLs, and a sack. For his efforts, he collected MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his EMU career.
McGill appears on the All-MAC teams for the second-time in his career following a second team showing in 2018. A fixture on the preseason watch lists in the preseason with Bednarik Award, Nagurski, and Thorpe Award Watch List selections, McGill finished the regular season with 29 tackles, five pass breakups, two TFLs, and an interception as senior.
Having started 39 of 49 career games, McGill is tied for the most passes defended in an EMU career with 28 (21 breakups, 5 interceptions). He has compiled 118 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, and three fumble recoveries in his career. Since 2017, McGill has the fourth lowest passer ratings allowed at 48.4 of any active FBS cornerbacks with a minimum 500 snaps.
Eastern Michigan wrapped up the regular season with a 6-6 record to become bowl eligible for the third time in four years and continues one of the best four-year stretches in program history. Eastern's 25 wins over the past four years are the most since the team won 29 from 1986-89, and its just two victories shy of the program's cumulative total from 2000-10.
The Eagles are 10-4 in the month of November the last four years. In the four seasons prior, Eastern combined for a total of seven wins during the entire 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 campaigns.
Eastern was the only MAC team to boast a victory over a Power 5 Conference opponent in 2019. EMU walked off Illinois with a 24-yard field goal as time expired, Sept. 14, 2019. It was the third consecutive season that Eastern knocked off a Big Ten Conference opponent (2017 - Rutgers, 2018 - Purdue).
Overall, all but one of EMU's 12 opponents won five-or-more games in 2019 with seven of them being bowl eligible. Furthermore, EMU was one of just 11 FBS teams to have played in at least seven one-score games this season. EMU played the fourth-most single possession contests, as only North Carolina (9), Miami (Fla.) (8), and Pittsburgh (8) played in more games that went down to the wire.
In total, Eastern Michigan tallied a total of 95 game, season or career entries into the program's record books in 2019.
Coach Creighton and the Eagles now awaits their bowl selection, which will take place Sunday, Dec. 8. For more information on possible bowl destinations, visit EMU's bowl ticket interest page.
