MAC Names 14 Eagles to Football Academic All-MAC Team

The Eagles were tied for fourth-most of all MAC institutions
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team had 14 student-athletes representing EMU on the 2019 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Football Team, the conference office announced Monday, Dec. 16. The 14 Eagles recognized were tied with Toledo for the fourth-most among MAC institutions, as Ball State led the league with 20 selections.
Making the Academic All-MAC team were: senior Kobie Beltram (Antioch, Calif.-Antioch), junior Jake Donnellon (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Gabriel Richard), sophomore Dylan Drummond (Cleveland, Ohio-Cuyahoga Heights), sophomore Mike Haney (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee), senior Brody Hoying (Coldwater, Ohio-Coldwater), sophomore Marcellus Johnson (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community), junior Freddie McGee III (Canton, Mich.-Salem), senior Steven Nielsen (Dragoer, Denmark-La Lumiere (Ind.) School), senior Thomas Odukoya (Almere, Netherlands-Garden City C.C.), senior Yannik Rohrschneider (Hilden, Germany-Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Gymnasium), sophomore Chad Ryland (Lebanon, Pa.-Cedar Crest), sophomore Carter Stagner (Birmingham, Mich.-Seaholm), senior Breck Turner (Norwalk, Ohio-Norwalk), and junior Mike Van Hoeven (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw).
Hoying and Turner are two of only 12 MAC student-athletes this year named as four-time selections to the team. Donnellon and Neilson earned the recognition for the third time, while McGee III and Van Hoeven are two-time honorees. In total, 148 student-athletes received the honor.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Beltram, a sport management major with a 3.23 GPA, started all 12 games for the Eagles and has tallied a team-high 116 tackles. The All-MAC third team selection currently ranks fifth in the country with three fumbles recovered.
Donnellon played in all 12 games, making three starts as right guard at Akron, Nov. 12, at Northern Illinois, Nov. 19, versus Kent State, Nov. 29. The exercise science major boasts a 3.46 GPA and aided the Eagles' offensive line that marked the best passing offense in the conference at 280.8 yards per game.
A finance major with a 3.81 GPA, Drummond appeared in all 12 games with nine starts for the Green and White. The All-MAC third team selection posted 483 yards on 51 receptions with three touchdowns. His best game came against Coastal Carolina, Aug. 31, when he scored two touchdowns and totaled 52 yards.
Collecting the award for the first time, Haney has a 3.40 GPA in exercise science. A staple on the defensive line, he started 10 of the 12 games he played in, while recording 41 tackles. Against Buffalo, Nov. 2, Haney notched a career-high 11 tackles.
Hoying, a four-time Academic All-MAC selection and three-time All-MAC honoree, is working on his master's in finance with a 3.63 GPA, while also recording the fourth-most tackles of any Eagle student-athlete with 75 on the season. The Coldwater, Ohio native has tallied four interceptions, which ranks third in the league and 17th nationally. For his efforts, he earned All-MAC Second Team for outside linebacker.
Johnson, a construction management major with a 3.28 GPA, saw action in 12 games as part of the offensive line. The Normal, Ill. native played a crucial role as the Eagles' offense leads the league in passing offense with 280.8 yards per game and has the second-best passing efficiency in the MAC.
McGee III, a sport management major with a 3.39 GPA, started in five of the 11 games he played for the Green and White. The former walk-on posted 30 tackles this season, including three pass breakups for the Eagles.
Nielsen, a three-time Academic All-MAC selection, started in all 12 games at left tackle for EMU. The Dragoer, Denmark native holds a 3.65 GPA in sport management and helped the Eagle offense rank 24th nationally in pass efficiency (151.83).
Odukoya played in all 12 games, making seven starts for the Green and White. A sport management major with a 3.23 GPA, he tallied 16 yards on three receptions with his longest catch (10 yards) at Central Michigan, Oct. 5.
A first-time honoree, Rohrschneider appeared in 11 games on the Eastern Michigan line that has led the way for a pass-heavy offense. A sport management major with a 3.23 GPA, he helped an EMU offense rank among the nation's best in both fewest penalties (56) and fewest penalty yards per game (40.92).
A supply chain management major with a 3.73 GPA, Ryland played in all 12 contests as EMU's primary kicker. The Lebanon, Pa. native etched his name into the Eastern Michigan record book with a 52-yard field goal against Illinois, Sept. 14, which tied for the second-longest in school history. The first-time honoree made 11 field goals on 16 attempts and tallied 3,848 kickoff yards for the Green and White.
Stagner saw action in nine games as part of the Eagle defense. The criminology & criminal justice major holds a 3.30 GPA and recorded two tackles and one pass breakup.
A four-time Academic All-MAC selection, Turner appeared in 11 games, making two starts for Eastern Michigan this season. He rushed for a total of 100 yards while grabbing 14 passes for 100 yards in the backfield. The sport management major from Norwalk, Ohio holds a 3.30 GPA.
A 2019 Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) honoree, Van Hoeven played in every game for the Eagles. The starting center is a master's student with a 3.95 GPA in exercise science.

Hoying and Turner are two of only 12 MAC student-athletes this year named as four-time selections to the team. Donnellon and Neilson earned the recognition for the third time, while McGee III and Van Hoeven are two-time honorees. In total, 148 student-athletes received the honor.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Beltram, a sport management major with a 3.23 GPA, started all 12 games for the Eagles and has tallied a team-high 116 tackles. The All-MAC third team selection currently ranks fifth in the country with three fumbles recovered.
Donnellon played in all 12 games, making three starts as right guard at Akron, Nov. 12, at Northern Illinois, Nov. 19, versus Kent State, Nov. 29. The exercise science major boasts a 3.46 GPA and aided the Eagles' offensive line that marked the best passing offense in the conference at 280.8 yards per game.
A finance major with a 3.81 GPA, Drummond appeared in all 12 games with nine starts for the Green and White. The All-MAC third team selection posted 483 yards on 51 receptions with three touchdowns. His best game came against Coastal Carolina, Aug. 31, when he scored two touchdowns and totaled 52 yards.
Collecting the award for the first time, Haney has a 3.40 GPA in exercise science. A staple on the defensive line, he started 10 of the 12 games he played in, while recording 41 tackles. Against Buffalo, Nov. 2, Haney notched a career-high 11 tackles.
Hoying, a four-time Academic All-MAC selection and three-time All-MAC honoree, is working on his master's in finance with a 3.63 GPA, while also recording the fourth-most tackles of any Eagle student-athlete with 75 on the season. The Coldwater, Ohio native has tallied four interceptions, which ranks third in the league and 17th nationally. For his efforts, he earned All-MAC Second Team for outside linebacker.
Johnson, a construction management major with a 3.28 GPA, saw action in 12 games as part of the offensive line. The Normal, Ill. native played a crucial role as the Eagles' offense leads the league in passing offense with 280.8 yards per game and has the second-best passing efficiency in the MAC.
McGee III, a sport management major with a 3.39 GPA, started in five of the 11 games he played for the Green and White. The former walk-on posted 30 tackles this season, including three pass breakups for the Eagles.
Nielsen, a three-time Academic All-MAC selection, started in all 12 games at left tackle for EMU. The Dragoer, Denmark native holds a 3.65 GPA in sport management and helped the Eagle offense rank 24th nationally in pass efficiency (151.83).
Odukoya played in all 12 games, making seven starts for the Green and White. A sport management major with a 3.23 GPA, he tallied 16 yards on three receptions with his longest catch (10 yards) at Central Michigan, Oct. 5.
A first-time honoree, Rohrschneider appeared in 11 games on the Eastern Michigan line that has led the way for a pass-heavy offense. A sport management major with a 3.23 GPA, he helped an EMU offense rank among the nation's best in both fewest penalties (56) and fewest penalty yards per game (40.92).
A supply chain management major with a 3.73 GPA, Ryland played in all 12 contests as EMU's primary kicker. The Lebanon, Pa. native etched his name into the Eastern Michigan record book with a 52-yard field goal against Illinois, Sept. 14, which tied for the second-longest in school history. The first-time honoree made 11 field goals on 16 attempts and tallied 3,848 kickoff yards for the Green and White.
Stagner saw action in nine games as part of the Eagle defense. The criminology & criminal justice major holds a 3.30 GPA and recorded two tackles and one pass breakup.
A four-time Academic All-MAC selection, Turner appeared in 11 games, making two starts for Eastern Michigan this season. He rushed for a total of 100 yards while grabbing 14 passes for 100 yards in the backfield. The sport management major from Norwalk, Ohio holds a 3.30 GPA.
A 2019 Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) honoree, Van Hoeven played in every game for the Eagles. The starting center is a master's student with a 3.95 GPA in exercise science.
