EMU will close the season tomorrow, Nov. 16, at Toledo
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – On the road for its final weekend of regular season play, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking loss, 3-1, at the hands of Ball State University tonight, Nov. 15.
With the loss, Eastern (10-17, 5-10 MAC) has been mathematically eliminated from the opportunity to participate in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, which will be played Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 21-24, in Bowling Green, Ohio.
An upperclassman-led match, senior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) headed the offensive effort for the Green and White, contributing 18 kills, while fellow senior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) had a 50-assist night on defense.
Eastern began the match with a determined demeanor, opening the first set on a 9-3 run. Sophomore Mackenzie Garis (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Praire Ridge) contributed a service ace, her 13th of the season, while Haut paced the squad with five kills in the opening frame. In all, the Eagles outhit Ball State, .316-.143 in the first set en route to claiming a 25-23 victory.
Up one set, EMU opened the second with momentum similar to that which it carried throughout the first. The Eagles raced out to a 7-2 lead, riding two Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) service aces in the first three points of the set. Despite the five-point EMU advantage, Ball State was able to go on a run of its own, winning eight of the next 11 points to take the lead, 11-10. A back-and-forth affair throughout the game, Ball State eventually pulled away, taking the set, 25-17.
Tied at one set apiece, Ball State elevated its level of play to a new level. Despite fight from Eastern, it was unable to outpace the Cardinals, who took the next two sets by scores of 25-19, and 25-23, to claim the match, three-sets-to-one.
Although the Eagles will be unable to qualify for the postseason, the team can still close its season with a win, as it treks to Toledo for its final match of the year, tomorrow, Nov. 16. The contest will begin at 7 p.m.
