176 Eagles have volunteered their time with the Second and Seven Foundation

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – During the 2018-19 school year, Eastern Michigan University student-athletes have been dedicating their Friday mornings to visiting local elementary schools. Each week, roughly 20 student-athletes volunteer to read with a second grade class and provide them with a book to take home.

The student-athletes volunteer through a program called The 2nd and 7 Foundation, a non-profit organization that focuses on reading and mentorship by providing free books and positive role models to children in underprivileged areas. 2nd and 7 was started in Columbus, Ohio by three former football players from The Ohio State University.

Eastern Michigan University senior Jennifer Bucci (Toronto, Ont.-Bishop Allen Academy) of the rowing team is a frequent volunteer.

"2nd and 7 is one of my favorite volunteer opportunities because it's so great being able to not only give back to the local community, but specifically the youth too," says Bucci. "I love children and always have so much fun."

Last semester, 176 EMU student-athletes offered their free time to promote literacy and donated around 420 books to the Ypsilanti community. Eastern Michigan University Athletics will continue to volunteer with 2nd and 7 in the winter semester.
