DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team travels to DeKalb, Ill. for the Northern Illinois University Triangular Friday, Jan. 18. The meet will include host- Northern Illinois University and Western Michigan University and is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the NIU Convocation Center.
EMU is coming off its season-opening meet, placing fourth at the Pitt Quad, and looks to build off the momentum from its vault performance, while focusing on growing confidence and consistency as it takes on two Mid-American Conference foes.
FOLLOWING THE MEET: Fans can follow the meet through live stats and a live stream offered by ESPN3. Links for both can be found on the EMU gymnastics schedule page located on EMUEagles.com.
LAST TIME OUT: The Green and White took fourth place in the quad meet hosted by the University of Pittsburgh with a score of 192.700, Jan. 12. The Eagles fell short against West Virginia University (195.500), Pitt (194.750), and Utah State University (194.600). The highlight of the day came at vault, where the Green and White posted its highest team score, 48.850.
FRESHMAN FIRSTS: Two freshmen for EMU saw their first collegiate competition at the Pittsburgh Quad on Jan. 12. Shannon Gregory landed a 9.100 in beam and a 9.650 on the floor, while Caitlin Salter in the same events put up 9.575 and 9.650, respectively.
REACH FOR THE STARS: Eastern is out to a great start on vault, ranking 21st in the NCAA after week one of competition with an overall score of 48.950 at the Pitt Quad. Senior Megan Hultgren leads the charge for EMU, after a 9.850 in the season-opener, and is helped by teammates junior Emili Dobronics' 9.775, and sophomores Cali Harden and Jada Rondeau, who both landed a 9.725.
IN RECENT HISTORY: The Eagles have faired well against their in-state opponent Western Michigan, having a record of 9-4 since 2008, while topping the Broncos consecutively the last two seasons. However, EMU has had almost the opposite outcome when facing Northern Illinois, having gone 4-6 in the same time frame and having fallen to the Huskies the previous two seasons.
The upcoming meet will see Eastern look to continue its streak against Western Michigan, while turning the tides against Northern Illinois.
LOOKING AHEAD: Eastern welcomes Ball State University to the Convocation Center for EMU's home-opener, Thursday, Jan. 24. Last season, EMU travelled to Muncie, Ind. and brought back a 194.225- 191.50 win. Then-freshman, Jada Rondeau led the way for the Green and White as the only all around competitor, landing a 38.525 on the day. The action is set to start at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
