Eagles Volleyball Sweeps Day to Win Colonial Classic

Jordan Smith earns tournament MVP, Cassie Haut named All-Tournament Team

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team continued its winning ways in the Old Dominion State, sweeping both Savannah State University and the College of William and Mary to earn the title of champions of the Colonial Classic.

Highlighting the day was senior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon), who registered her 1,000th career kill in the first match against Savannah State. The outside hitter becomes the 15th member of the 1,000 kill club for EMU. She was named the Colonial Classic MVP, and was joined on the All-Tournament team by redshirt junior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central).

The Eagles kicked off Saturday's action against winless Savannah State, coming out on top 25-16, 25-11, 25-21.

Smith led a balanced EMU attack with nine kills and a .304 attack percentage, while junior Ariel Hamby (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) added eight kills on .467 hitting.

As a team, Eastern outhit Savannah State, .304 to .034, while also outpacing the Tigers in kills, 35 to 23, assists, 35-19, digs, 44-31, and blocks, four to three.

Junior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) led the Eagles with 17 assists, while redshirt senior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) added 16 of her own. Senior Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) was the lone member of the Green and White to finish with double-digit kills with 11.

Eastern completed the weekend sweep with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-12 win over tournament host College of William and Mary.

Redshirt junior Cassie Haut led the Eagles with13 kills while committing just two attack errors for a hitting percentage of .550. Joining her in double-digits was Jordan Smith, who finished with 12 kills. Ariel Hamby once again tied a career-best 11 kills, marking the third time she has reached the total this season. Sophomore Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) added nine kills with an attack percentage of .368 to go along with nine digs.

For the second time this season, setter Mallory Rajewski tallied 40 assists in a three-set match, while also adding nine digs and two kills. Libero Alyssa LaFace led all player with 13 digs.

One of the Eagles' biggest advantages in the match came at the service line, where EMU finished with a season-high 10 aces compared to W&M's two. It was the first time the Green and White reached double-digit kills since Sept. 9, 2017 against Lafayete. By hitting .352 as a team for the match, this weekend marked the first time in program history that the Eagles hit .300-or-better in three consecutive matches.

Eastern Michigan finishes the non-conference portion of the schedule with a trip to the Steel City of Pittsburgh to take part in the Robert Morris Invitational, Sept. 14-15. The Eagles will face the University of Houston, Robert Morris University, and Duquesne University in the two-day event.
