Eastern hit .430 as a team to set a new modern-era record
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team kicked off its weekend with a convincing 3-0 sweep of Norfolk State University, Friday, Sept. 7, at the William and Mary Colonial Classic.
The Eagles cruised from the get-go, turning aside the Spartans 25-9, 25-5, 25-11 for their most lopsided win of the season. Eastern hit a modern-era record .430, while Norfolk State turned in a -.080 mark. EMU dominated in kills, 43 to 12, digs, 51 to 32, assists, 40 to 11, and service aces, seven to one.
Highlighting the performance for the Green and White was senior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon), who tied a season-high with 17 kills, while hitting a career-best .652. The outside hitter also added four service aces and three digs.
No other Eagle finished with double-digit kills for the match, but the even production across the board saw Eastern turn in its season-high in attack percentage. The .430 mark is the highest attack percentage since Sept. 1, 2004 against Oakland, when EMU also hit .430.
Redshirt senior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and junior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) had 20 and 15 assists, respectively, while senior libero Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) put up 20 digs in the sweep.
EMU is back in action Saturday, Sept. 8, with a pair of matches, starting with Savannah State University at 10:30 a.m. The Eagles wrap up the weekend with a match against tournament host, the College of William and Mary, at 1 p.m.
