Volleyball Kicks Off MAC Play with 3-1 Win Over Central Michigan

Jordan Smith led four players in double-digit kills with 15
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team kicked off Mid-American Conference play with a trip to in-state rival Central Michigan University, topping the Chippewas 3-1 at McGuirk Arena.
After falling in the opening set, EMU rallied to take its first win in MAC play, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-21. Senior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) was one of four Eagles to finish with double-digit kills, leading the Eagles' attack with 15.
Redshirt junior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Central Catholic) added 13 kills to go along with eight total blocks, while sophomore Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) registered a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs. Junior Ariel Hamby (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) had her fifth double-digit kill performance of the season, finishing with 11.
Shining on the defensive side of the ball was Senior Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park), who put up 35 digs in the match, and junior Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian), who came off the bench to provide a spark on the floor and finished with five digs.
Redshirt senior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) led the team with 30 assists and added 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season, and junior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) registered her fourth double-double of the year with 26 assists and 10 digs of her own.
Eastern's defense led the way to the victory, finishing with 90 digs compared to Central's 75, and out-blocking Central, 12.5 to 9.5. The Eagles also hit .220 compared to the Chippewas' .152, and finished with 66 kills compared to CMU's 53.
EMU returns to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center for its first MAC home match of the season, hosting Kent State University Saturday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m.
