Kaylin Williams made five saves
NORMAL, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – A fourth-minute strike proved to be the difference as the Eastern Michigan University soccer team fell, 1-0, at Illinois State University Sunday, Aug. 19. Senior goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) finished with a game-high five saves.
Williams made four huge first-half saves, but an unlucky bounce off the crossbar allowed the Redbirds to take a 1-nil lead in the fourth minute. An initial shot pinged off the crossbar and dropped back to ISU's Abby Basler, who knocked a shot in off the far post.
EMU held the upperhand in the second period, registering 11 shots to ISU's six. A cross played to the far post met a heading attempt by sophomore Madeline Olson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville), before fellow sophomore Parys Kerr (Whitby, Ontario-Pickering) had her shot saved on the rebound.
Looking for the equalizer, the Eagles maintained pressure of the Redbirds' back line. Redshirt senior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) slipped a pass through to freshman Kylie Frantz (Erie, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), but her shot went into the side netting. Eastern came right back moments later, using a free kick to create another chance, but sophomore Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay) put the shot wide.
The Green and White fired off shot after shot in the closing 10 minutes, but could not find the back of the net, falling 1-0.
Eastern Michigan returns to the pitch Friday, Aug. 24, for the start of a three-game homestand. EMU opens its home portion of the schedule against the University of Detroit Mercy at 5 p.m.
