YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A pair of goals late in the first half lifted the Eastern Michigan University soccer team past the University of Detroit Mercy, 2-1, Friday evening, Aug. 24, at Scicluna Field. Redshirt junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) netted her 10th career goal and the game-winner in the 45th minute.
Eastern Michigan controlled the game from start-to-finish, outshooting Detroit Mercy by a 22-8 tally. EMU put nine shots on target, while UDM finished with five shots on goal. In goal, senior Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) tallied four saves.
The Eagles were aggressive from the get-go, recording 15 shots in the opening period. Minutes after sophomore Chloe Chatzis (Macomb, Mich.-Henry Ford II) pinged a shot of the crossbar, fellow sophomore Madeline Olson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) was taken down inside the 18 and awarded a penalty. Olson buried the 40th minute PK, putting the Eagles up, 1-0, and swinging momentum even further in favor the Eagles.
Continuing to stick it to the Detroit Mercy backline, Eastern Michigan earned a corner with time winding down. Redshirt sophomore Sabrina McNeill's (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) service landed at the feet of Nason, who netted the ultimate game-winner.
Detroit Mercy got a goal back in the second half, breaking the shutout on a laser from 20 yards out to cut EMU's lead to one, 2-1, with 20 minutes to play. The Eagles held off the Titans from there, en route to their first win over UDM since 2013.
Eastern returns to action against the University of Dayton Sunday, Aug. 26. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
