Women's Swimming and Diving Earns CSCAA Scholar Honors

A MAC-leading nine Eagles earned individual recognition for their academic and athletic prowess

NORFOLK, Va. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team was recognized by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for its excellence in the classroom at the end of June. Nine Eagles garnered CSCAA Individual Scholar All-America accolades, including a pair of first team honorees. EMU's number of individual selections was tops in the Mid-American Conference, and the Eagles were the only school to have multiple first team members.

2018 NCAA qualifiers, Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) and Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) garnered First Team CSCAA Scholar All-America honors, while Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este), Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville), Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest), Molly Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Harrison), Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green), Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville), and Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) were named CSCAA Scholar All-America Honorable Mention.

The selections recognize students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. In order to lock up honorable mention, student-athletes must maintain a 3.50 GPA and have achieved a 'B' time standard or competed at a regional or zone qualifying meet.

Duncan, a marketing major with 3.71 grade point average, finished her junior season as a two-time All-American. The Galesburg, Ill. native swam in every meet for the Eagles before wrapping up the season at the NCAA Championships where she finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke and 14th in the 200 breast. At the conference championships, she defended her title, winning the 100 breaststroke for the third consecutive season. The junior was a force in the breaststroke for the Green and White, totaling 13 first-place finishes, including five sweeps of the 100 and 200 Breast, en route to First Team All-MAC honors. Her other honors include Google Cloud Academic All-District, Academic All-Mid-American Conference, and MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete.

Diving in nine meets for Eastern, Shereda became EMU's first diver to qualify for nationals since 2013. After the senior took third in the 3-meter at the MAC Championships, she went on to finish 38th at the 2018 NCAA Championships. The marketing major with a 3.75 grade point average broke through the 300-point barrier twice, while compiling 12 top-three finishes.

One of two freshmen to earn the Scholar All-America honor, Berger had a solid rookie season as a diver. The Batavia, Ohio native competed in eight events for the Green and White, posting a career best in the 3-meter against Albion. Finished the season at the MAC Championships where she finished 15th and 13th on the 1-and 3-meter dives, respectively.

Swimming in 10 meets for Eastern, Gavigan owns a 3.89 grade point average as a nursing major. The sophomore totaled 25 top-three finishes, including 16 first-place finishes before concluding the season at the MAC Championships. The First Team All-MAC honoree won her first MAC title with a record-breaking time of 1:55.93 in the 200 backstroke, before taking third in the 100 back at 54.17. This is the second time the sophomore has been named CSCAA Scholar All-America. 

Johnston dove in eight meets for the Eagles, compiling eight top-three finishes. The Ottawa, Ontario native notched a pair of wins in the 3-meter, while breaking the 300-point barrier three times throughout the season. En route to a Second Team All-MAC selection, Johnston placed third and fourth in the 1- and 3-meter dives at the conference championships, respectively. The sophomore holds an impressive 3.94 GPA as an actuarial science and economics major.
Diving in five meets, Mace finished the season with three top-five finishes. Mace holds a 3.90 grade point average while majoring in anthropology.

An exercise science major with a 3.78 GPA, Miller dove in nine meets for the Green and White. The senior compiled 11 top-five finishes throughout the season before ending her collegiate career at the MAC Championships. Placing 11th and 14th in the 1- and 3-meter, respectively, at the championships, the Farmington Hills, Mich. native turned in a career-best score of 287.50 on the 3-meter. 

Schempf, the other rookie to earn Scholar All-America honors, dove in eight meets for the Eagles this season. The Bowling Green, Ohio native turned in a season-high score of 276.83 in the 1-meter against Wayne State, before posting ninth and 16th place finishes in the 1- and 3-meter, respectively, at the MAC Championships.

A First Team All-MAC honoree, Swartz compiled 26 top-three finishes, including 20 event wins, throughout 11 meets in her junior year. The Dayton, Ohio native defended her 1650 free MAC title, while becoming the first Eagle in program history to win the 400 individual medley at the conference championships. The MAC Most Outstanding Swimmer selection clocked a pair of record-beating times in the 500 free and 400 IM at 4:44.60 and 4:14.08, at MACs, respectively. Swartz is a public relations major with a 3.26 grade point average.

Rounding out EMU's selections is Tsafantakis, who competed in 10 meets for Eastern, posting seven top-three finishes and a pair of event wins in her second year as an Eagle.  The Washington, Mich. native  crossed the 300-point barrier twice before finishing fourth and sixth on the 1- and 3-meter, respectively, at the MAC Championships. Tsfantakis is an exercise major  with a 3.71 GPA.
