The team ranked seventh in the nation for collective GPA
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team had 13 student-athletes earn Scholastic All-America honors for the 2017-18 academic year by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA), the office announced Monday, July 30.
The team ranked seventh out of the 77 participating institutions with a collective grade-point average (GPA) of 3.6683. Additionally, the team ranked ninth in terms of the percentage of the team who received the award (76.47).
The 13 Eagles who earned the honors are recent graduates Megan Marino, Lacey Rubin, Jules Schwartz, and Kendall Valentin, as well as juniors Sydney Audet (Sylvania, Ohio-Sylvania Northview) and Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center), sophomore Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), redshirt freshman Allison Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton), and freshmen Megan Benzie (Roanoke, Va.-Cave Spring), Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick), Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Brianna Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool), and Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn.-Central).
A total of 760 student-athletes across the nation met the required 3.5 grade-point average (GPA) to earn Scholastic All-America honors. The percentage of women's collegiate gymnasts honored this year was a record 55. Last season, 47.83 percent of gymnasts earned the award. The previous high was set in 2015-16 with 49 percent of student-athletes earning a 3.5 or better GPA. GK Elite Sportswear, a WCGA sponsor, provides a certificate to each Scholastic All-America honoree and her coach.
Additionally, four Eagles (Marino, Rubin, Bezold, and Price) acted as members of a record-setting amount of student-athletes – 118 (8.54 percent) - who earned a 4.0 GPA this year. This number has steadily risen since 2008 with 101 (7.68 percent) reaching academic perfection last year and 97 (7.52 percent) in 2015-16.
"The emphasis the collegiate women's gymnastics programs have placed on academics is clearly highlighted by the success of our team and individual grade point averages," Kerrie Turner, WCGA president, said. "The 760 collegiate gymnastics student-athletes earning WCGA Scholastic All-America recognition have worked diligently to find the successful balance between gymnastics and academics. The WCGA truly commends the student-athletes, the academic support personnel and the coaches within each program supporting and striving for academic excellence."
The WCGA is the advocate for women's collegiate gymnastics. Until this month, the coaches' association was known as the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women.
