Seven Eagles Qualify to NCAA East Regionals

- The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team qualified seven student-athletes to the NCAA East Regionals Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26 in Tampa, Fla., the NCAA announced Thursday, May 17. The seven student-athletes will compete in five track events and two field events throughout the three days of competition.

In order to qualify for the NCAA East Regional, an individual must be among the top 48 declared student-athletes in their respective events. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams are accepted into the competition.

Qualifying to the regional round for Eastern is redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83), seniors Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1), Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area), Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison), and Janina Pollatz (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian), and junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville).

This is the fourth consecutive season McDermitt and Dreimane will represent EMU in the regionals, while it acts as Bogdanova's third trip, and Cizmas, Jones, Meyers, and Pollatz's second.

EMU's highest seed going into the weekend is Bogdanova, who sits at seventh in the 3000m steeplechase. Her personal-record time of 10:04.88 she clocked in the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 12, earned her gold in the conference meet, while also serving as the third-fastest time in EMU history. That time also ranks 18th in the nation this season.

Cizmas is also seeded in the top-10 for her event, as her 1500m time of 4:16.83 ranks 10th in the region.  That time, in which she notched earlier this season in the Raliegh Relays, March 31, serves as the fastes time in program history. 

McDermitt and Meyers will be racing side-by-side in the 5000m, with the pair seeded at 18 and 19, respectively. Meyers earned her spot with an impressive personal-record setting performance at the Mid-American Conference Championships, where she placed second with a time of 16:14.20. That time moved her up to third all-time in the EMU outdoor record book. McDermitt's time of 16:15.52 also came in the conference title race, as she was the fourth competitor to cross the finish line.

Jones serves as the lone Eagle competing in sprinting events, having qualified for both the 200m and 400m dash. The Greensburg, Pa. native clocked personal records in each event throughout the season, marking a 200m time of 23.50 and a 400m time of 53.64. Moreover, each of those times fall within the top-10 all-time in program history, with her 200m PR ranking third, and her 400m personal-best slotted at eighth.

Pollatz and Dreimane comprise the Eastern representatives in the field events, with Pollatz seeded 18th in the pole vault and Dreimane seeded 27th in the triple jump. Pollatz came away with the best performance of her career at the Jesse Owens Classic, April 21, marking the program's third-best vault ever with a height  of 4.17m to take first place. Dreimane's season-best triple jump came during the Tennessee Relays, April 12, where she just missed out on her personal-record of 12.87m, finishing with a mark of 12.85m.
