BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team concluded the 2018 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championship in second place Saturday, May 12 in Buffalo, N.Y. EMU finished with 122 points behind the University of Akron who ended with 136.5.
"I'm incredibly proud of how hard our team battled this weekend," EMU Head Coach Sue Parks said. "The girls came ready to compete and fought for every point. Unfortunately, we had some setbacks throughout the meet and in the end, we just didn't have enough beat a tough Akron team. We had our eye on the triple crown and we're disappointed that we couldn't pull it off but we're not going to let it take away from all that we've accomplished so far this year."
Overall, Eastern completed the weekend with three event titles. Additionally, for her efforts, redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) earned MAC Most Valuable Performer for the second straight season.
Eastern had strong performances from the three EMU representatives in the 5000m run, as they claimed the top-two spots and had three of the four top finishes. Bogdanova paced the 5000m race with an incredible time of 16:09.13, which serves as the new MAC Championship record time. Junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville) opened it up on the home stretch to take over second place with a personal-record time of 16:14.20. On top of it being a personal-record, Meyers' time also ranks as the third-fastest time in EMU history, and her placement was the highest outdoor championship finish she has had in the event. Finally, after leading for majority of the race, senior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) held on to claim fourth and add five points. This is the second consecutive year Bogdanova claimed the outdoor 5000m title, and the third straight year both Bogdanova and McDermitt finished within the top-four.
The 400 relay cohort consisting of senior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area), junior Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell), and sophomores Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) and Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) once again showed their dominance over the other squads in the conference. The four entered the weekend with the fastest time in the conference during the regular season, and came away on top with a finishing time of 45.27. By winning that title, EMU has now won the 400 relay championship in three straight years.
Each member of the 400 relay team also had impressive individual performances as well. Jones and Johnston each set personal-records in the 400m dash, with Jones crossing in 53.64 to capture silver and Johnston notching a finishing time of 54.12 to place fourth. The two also brought in points during the 200m dash, as Jones and Johnston finished third and sixth in 23.59 and 24.17, respectively. Additionally, Harris had a strong showing in the 100m dash. Despite being the only EMU representative in the event, Harris nabbed much needed points for Eastern by finishing third with a time of 11.68.
Senior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) led the way in the field events, claiming Second Team All-MAC honors in the high jump, reaching a height of 1.64m to take second.
With that, the season has come to an end for most of the student-athletes. However, we will now wait to see if any individuals qualify for the NCAA East Regionals in Tampa, Fla. Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26.
