Each week two Eagles will be honored for their success on the field
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Each week, the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics names the EMUCU's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic media relations department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are softball athlete, Amanda Akles, and baseball athlete, Justin McMurtrey.
Amanda Akles
Sport: Softball
Position: Third Base
Year: Junior
Major: Criminal Justice
Week's Achievements: Junior infielder Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) had a terrific week for the Eagles, who won the weekend series over Miami. Akles was a force to be reckoned with at the plate hitting at a .750 (6-for-8) with four home runs and six RBIs, all to go along with a slugging percentage of 2.250. The junior got the week started on Tuesday against Toledo, notching a single, before exploding at the plate against the RedHawks over the weekend. The La Habra, Calif. native's two-run, walk-off home run lifted the Eagles to a 6-4 win over MU, Friday, April 9. Akles would then go on to add another two dingers as the Eagles split Saturday's double header. The junior was a nightmare for the pitchers as the opponents intentionally walked her five times throughout the three games. Akles has moved up in the record book as she is now sixth in program history with 20 career home runs, while she tied her career-high for homers in a single game.
Justin McMurtrey
Sport: Baseball
Position: RHP
Year: Senior
Major: Communication
Week's Achievements: Senior Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shasta) tossed a gem in a series opening win over Ball State, April 6. The righty went eight innings of shut out baseball, only allowing four hits and one walk while striking out a career-best seven batters. He earned his third win of his season and tenth of his career. His efforts led to a 1-0 shutout out win in the series opener, the second MAC shutout win of the season, as well as the first win in the 2-1 series win over Ball State, the second-straight series win for the Eagles.
