EMU fell to Toledo, 4-3, but bounced back to beat Tiffin, 5-2
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team split its final home date of the regular season Friday, April 13, falling in Mid-American Conference play to the University of Toledo, 4-3, and defeating Tiffin University 5-2 in non-league action.
This was an absolutely brutal loss it was so close," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "We did almost everything we needed to in the singles to get the win but came up just a hair short. It was especially tough to lose on senior day really want to get the victory for them."
The Eagles celebrated the careers of seniors Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani), Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figuera Pacheco), Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria), Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School), and Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) prior to the day's first match. Wiseman also recognized three-year starter Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) with a gift, and gave this year's freshman class of Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figuera Pacheco), and Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci) their Eastern Michigan letterman jackets.
After struggling in the doubles point, falling in quick fashion at No. 1 and No. 2, the Eagles made a surge in singles. Gogvadze was victorious 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 at No. 1 to get back in the win column for her 19th win of the season. EMU also got wins from Ansaloni at No. 5 and Barcelo Almoyna at No. 6, but it was after Toledo had clinched the match.
"Fortunately we've got one last chance to bounce back in the MAC season next week against northern Illinois and still have path to the tournament," said Wiseman.
Heading across town for the nightcap, Eastern played host to Tiffin University at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center, and snapped its five-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Dragons.
"After such a tough loss to Toledo we really did a great job gathering our emotions and being able to get back on the court do a good job of taking care of business in our second match," said Wiseman. "Tiffin is always a tough team, they're getting ready for their NCAA regionals, so it was a really good chance for us to work on some things before we close out our season."
EMU jumped ahead by securing the doubles point with 6-2 wins from its No. 1 and No. 2 teams. Ani Gogvadze/Andrea Martinovska took the top spot, while Giuliana Ansaloni/Marie Mayerova came away with the win at No. 2.
The winning trend continued in the singles game, as Ansaloni got the winning started with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4. Senior Anna Veleva stepped into the No. 3 spot and won by a 6-4, 6-4 score, while Mayerova clinched the match win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2. Gogvadze made it a perfect 2-0 day with a 7-5, 6-3 win at the top singles spot, and the Eagles got back on the right track with the win.
Eastern Michigan has one match remaining in the regular season schedule as it travels to Northern Illinois Friday, April 20 for a 1 p.m. match. There is still an outside chance at the Eagles making the Mid-American Conference tournament, but they must win against the Huskies and receive some help along the way.
