MacCallum Named MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week

The redshirt junior won the 184 lbs. title at the MAC Championships
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University redshirt junior wrestler Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) earned Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week honors for the period ending Sunday, March 4, the league office announced Wednesday, March 7.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0-or-better and performs well during the week's competition. MacCallum currently holds a 3.46 GPA as a finance major.
MacCallum took home the 184 lbs. title at the 2018 MAC Wrestling Championships Sunday, March 4. It was the first individual title for the Eagles since 2009. The Illinois native went 3-0 over the two-day span of the tournament as the No. 3 seed.
He began the tournament with a 3-1 win, followed by a sudden victory triumph over No. 2-seeded Jordan Ellingwood of CMU to reach the finals. There, he dominated No. 4-seeded Bryce Gorman of NIU in an 8-2 decision to take the crown.
The EMU grapplers qualified five individuals into the upcoming NCAA Championships, held at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, March 15-17. The five qualifiers tie a program record which was set in 1989, and most recently matched in 1996. Action on the mats begins Thursday, March 15, at noon.
