Eastern's all-time steals leader is just two steals from the single-season record
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - - On the heels of being named to his third straight All-MAC Defensive Team, Eastern Michigan University men's basketball senior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Tuesday, March 6. The award was selected in a vote of the league's coaches.
Bond proved his defensive prowess yet again in 2017-18, being named to the MAC All-Defensive team for the third straight year. The Baltimore, Md. native set the Eastern Michigan record for career steals, passing all-time great Earl Boykins' record of 220 against Northern Illinois, Feb. 24. Bond finished second in the league in steals per game at 2.5, and also finished in the top 10 in blocks per game with a 1.1 average.
The senior has rewritten the record books when it comes to thievery, registering three of the top-five single-season steal marks, including 77 in his swansong. He needs just one steal to tie the all-time single-season record for swipes, currently held by Lorenzo Neely.
Bond and the Eagles earned the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament thanks to the 19th 20-win season in program history. Eastern will face No. 11 Akron, Thursday, March 8 at approximately 9 p.m.
