12 Eagles Earn Academic All-MAC Honors

Eastern continues its tradition of excellence in both the classroom and athletic competition

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team landed 12 student-athletes in the All-Mid-American Conference Academic team for the 2018 indoor season, the league office announced Friday, March 23.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Receiving the honors for EMU was: redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83), junior Rebekah Carr (Celina, Ohio-Celina), seniors Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1), and Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), junior Elisa Hendriksen (Howell, Mich.-Cosby), sophomore Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), junior Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), seniors Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill.-Rockford Lutheran) and Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community), sophomore Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic), and senior Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium-Sportschool KA2).
Bogdanova finished out her incredible indoor career at the NCAA Championships, March 9-10, where she earned First Team All-American honors in the distance medley relay (DMR) by helping the cohort place seventh in the nation, before running to an 11th-place finish in the 3000m to earn Second Team All-American honors in the event. Additionally, the Kazan, Russia native earned Most Valuable Performer in the MAC Championships, taking first in the 5000m, second in the 3000m, and third in the mile run. Based on her championship performance in the 5000m, she was also named to the All-MAC First Team. During the regular season, Bogdanova earned both MAC Track Athlete of the Week and MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honors twice. Furthermore, she helped solidify herself as one of EMU's best track and field athletes of all time, setting a new school record in the 3000m with a mark of 9:05.81, assisting the DMR squad to a new program best time of 11:00.51, and running to the third-best 5000m time in school history, 16:16.81. Currently, the redshirt senior holds a 3.75 in an individualized studies program.
A junior with a 3.53 GPA in sport management, Carr served as the most consistent Eagle in pole vault this season. Throughout the season, Carr competed seven times in the event, including the MAC Championships where she finished 13th. Having participated in a total of six events during the span of the season, Carr put together three performances which warranted a top-three finish. Two of those finishes saw Carr standing atop the podium for pole vault, as the Celina, Ohio native won gold in the BGSU Open, Dec. 8, and BGSU Tom Wright Classic, Jan. 19.
Another member of the historic DMR team, Cizmas ended her indoor career earning First Team All-American and All-MAC honors for her performance in the event. Aditionally, she also won gold in the mile, and placed second in the 800m during the MAC Championships. A dominant force during the regular season, Cizmas set a new program record in the mile with a time of 4:39.29, acted as a vital piece of the DMR team setting a new school record, and ranked third in the MAC for the 800m (2:08.61) and 3000m (9:29.40), while also ranking fifth in the 5000m (16:34.18). Moreover, Cizmas also earned MAC Track Athlete of the Week in back-to-back weeks. On top of her outstanding acheivements in competition, the senior also has a 3.68 GPA while majoring in exercise science.
A staple in EMU's jumps crew, Dreimane continued her success in the triple, long, and high jump this season, as well as in the classroom, where she currently holds a 3.41 GPA while majoring in computer science applied. Collectively, Dreimane won eight event titles competing in the three events and ranked in the top-10 in the conference for both the long and high jump. The senior held the seventh-longest distance in the conference in the long jump with a mark of 5.83m, and ranked ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.69m. Furthermore, the Latvia native finished fifth at the MAC Championships in the high jump with a height of 1.67m.
Competing exclusively in the 60H and the long jump, Goff placed in the top-three of her respective events four times. Her best 60H performance came in the Hillsdale "Wide-Track" Classic, where she recorded the 10th-fastest time in the conference with a mark of 8.57 to place second in the meet. She also set a personal record in the long jump during the GVSU Big Meet, claiming a distance of 5.74m to place second in the meet, which also served as the 11th-best long jump in the conference. Alongside clearing hurdles on the track, the senior has also found success in the classroom setting, having accumulated a 3.45 GPA while studying marketing.
In her first year eligible for Academic All-MAC honors, Hendriksen held an impressive GPA of 3.82 while studying Psychology, and competed in eight meets for the Eagles in the regular season. As one of EMU's most versatile student-athletes, Hendriksen competed in a sleu of events while donning the Green and White, including the pentathlon during the Hillsdale "Wide-Track" Classic, where she finished fifth with a total score of 2717. Her highest placement came as a member of the 4x400 squad, where she ran a leg to help the team to second place in the BGSU Tom Wright Classic.
Johnston had another incredible season as a premier sprinter in the MAC, finishing 2017-18 off with Second Team All-MAC honors she earned as a member of the 4x400 relay squad. Additionally, the sophomore also placed fourth at the championship meet in the 200 and 400m with times of 24.62 and 54.98, respectively. Not including the postseason, Johnston put together an impressive eight performances that warranted a top-three placement. This year serves as the first she is eligible for the award, and currently holds a 3.40 GPA while studying Art.
One of the members of Eastern's elite sprints crew, Mason competed in eight total meets throughout the season, including the conference championship where she placed fourth in the 60m dash. In the championship race, Mason ran to a season-best time of 7.56, which was the seventh-fastest 60m time in the 2017-18 campaign. Overall, she placed within the top-five in the 60m six times, with her best placement coming in the BGSU Tom Wright Classic, where she came in second with a time of 7.67. Through the 2018 winter semester, Mason has earned a 3.52 GPA while studying exercise science.
A senior from Rockford, Ill., Mesa primarily found herself competing in the 800m. Having participated in the event during eight different meets for the Eagles, her best event finishes came during the BGSU Tom Wright Classic, as she was also a member of the event-winning 4x400 relay team, while finishing second in the 800m with a time of 2:17.39. Mesa currently holds a 3.52 GPA, while majoring in an individualized studies program.
A junior from Zionsville, Ind., Meyers continued her dominance as a member of the distance team. On top of acting as an alternate for the All-American DMR team, Meyers notched first place in both the 3000m and DMR at the MAC Championships, as well as second place in the mile, earning First Team All-MAC honors for her efforts. Currently, the junior boasts an impressive 3.88 GPA while studying marketing.
Another Eagle to participate in the pentathlon during the 2017-18 season, Salzbrunn closed out her campaign by finishing 10th in the pentathlon during the MAC Championship, totaling a career-high in points with 2985. Additionally, this is the sophomore's first year being eligible for the award, and she also holds the highest GPA in EMU's all-academic class with a 3.93.
The final member of Eastern's 2017-18 Academic All-MAC team, Wyns concluded her final indoor season as one of the four student-athletes to earn First Team All-American honors. Not only was she a member of the NCAA Championship race, but she also ran a leg in the program's fastest DMR performance of all time. Hailing from Belgium, Wyns served as the conference's standard for this year's 800m run, after racing to EMU's second-best time of 2:07.78 at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 3, to finish fifth in the meet and pace the MAC for the season. Additionally, Wyns placed first in both the DMR and 800m at the MAC Championships, earning First Team All-MAC honors for the first time in her career. Along with all of her outstanding athletic accomplishments throughout the season, Wyns has an impressive 3.53 GPA while majoring in psychology.
The Eagles return to their outdoor slate Friday-Saturday, March 30-31, when they take part in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.

Having participated in the event during eight different meets for the Eagles, her best event finishes came during the BGSU Tom Wright Classic, as she was also a member of the event-winning 4x400 relay team, while finishing second in the 800m with a time of 2:17.39. Mesa currently holds a 3.52 GPA, while majoring in an individualized studies program.
A junior from Zionsville, Ind., Meyers continued her dominance as a member of the distance team. On top of acting as an alternate for the All-American DMR team, Meyers notched first place in both the 3000m and DMR at the MAC Championships, as well as second place in the mile, earning First Team All-MAC honors for her efforts. Currently, the junior boasts an impressive 3.88 GPA while studying marketing.
Another Eagle to participate in the pentathlon during the 2017-18 season, Salzbrunn closed out her campaign by finishing 10th in the pentathlon during the MAC Championship, totaling a career-high in points with 2985. Additionally, this is the sophomore's first year being eligible for the award, and she also holds the highest GPA in EMU's all-academic class with a 3.93.
The final member of Eastern's 2017-18 Academic All-MAC team, Wyns concluded her final indoor season as one of the four student-athletes to earn First Team All-American honors. Not only was she a member of the NCAA Championship race, but she also ran a leg in the program's fastest DMR performance of all time. Hailing from Belgium, Wyns served as the conference's standard for this year's 800m run, after racing to EMU's second-best time of 2:07.78 at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 3, to finish fifth in the meet and pace the MAC for the season. Additionally, Wyns placed first in both the DMR and 800m at the MAC Championships, earning First Team All-MAC honors for the first time in her career. Along with all of her outstanding athletic accomplishments throughout the season, Wyns has an impressive 3.53 GPA while majoring in psychology.
The Eagles return to their outdoor slate Friday-Saturday, March 30-31, when they take part in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
