Tanner Smith Wins Fifth Tournament Title at Edinboro Open

EDINBORO, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University freshman wrestler Tanner Smith (New Carlisle, Ohio-Mechanicsburg) won his fifth open tournament title of the season, as he took the 149 lbs. crown wrestling unattached at the Edinboro Open Saturday, Feb. 3. The 'true' freshman is now a sterling 22-0 in his redshirt season.
Smith rolled through competition, winning all five of his bouts, including two by major decision and two by technical fall. In the finals, Smith trailed 4-1 in the match against two-time NCAA qualifier Jamal Morris of NC State, but came back to win by a tight 7-6 decision.
The New Carlisle, Ohio native has a team-high five technical falls on the year, as well as two pins and four major decisions. He is the second straight redshirt to have a 20-win season, joining redshirt freshman Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio-Lake) who had 22 last season in unattached competition.
Elsewhere on the day, EMU had four other wrestlers hit the mats. Redshirt sophomore David Kasper (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) won four matches in the consolation rounds at 165 lbs., including a 15-0 technical fall. The other two Eagles to pick up wins were unattached freshmen Mason Kauffman (Stratford, Wis.-Stratford) at 157 lbs., as well as Brandon Moen (Owatonna, Minn.-Owatonna) at 184 lbs. Kauffman had three wins by decision, while Moen picked one up by 11-5 decision.
The Eagles are back in action at home tomorrow, Feb. 4, when they host Kent State University for Senior Day. Action from the Convocation Center is set to start at noon, with the Senior Day ceremony taking place beforehand.
