BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team won its 15th Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship Saturday, Feb. 24, inside Perry Field House. The Eagles notched six event titles on the second day of the competition, ending with a team score of 179 points.
To no one's surprise, redshirt senior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) put together another impressive run in the 400m, ultimately taking first place in a time of 47.50. Additionally, freshman Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England) continued his outstanding first year winning bronze with a mark of 48.35.

Continuing the success in sprinting events, senior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio-Hudson) ran to a third-place finish in the 60m with a time of 6.80. Finishing just behind Antonio was sophomore Tyler Johnson (Dayton, Ohio-Stivers School for the Arts), who crossed in 6.81 and ranked fourth in the event.

The 60m hurdles saw three EMU competitors who qualified from yesterday's preliminary round. The team was led by sophomore Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) who finished third in 8.01. Junior Frank Douglas (Mansfield, Ohio-Mdison Comprehensive) and sophomore Ivan Suazo (Columbus, Ohio-Westland) also had strong outings, running to times of 8.08 and 8.18, earning fourth and fifth place, respectively.

The mile crew had an incredible race, which was capped off by the Eagles notching the top-two spots as freshman Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) and redshirt senior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge) finished in times of 4:08.71 and 4:09.27 to capture gold and silver, respectively. Day finished out his first indoor championship by winning his second gold medal of the weekend, this time, the freshman sensation ran to an incredible 4:08.71 in the 800m run. For his achievements in the two-day conference event, Day earned both MAC Freshman Track Performer of the Year and Most Valuable Performer. Sophomore Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga.-Blanche Ely) also had a great performance in the 800m, taking third place with a time of 1:54.37.

The distance runners continued their dominance in the 3000m run, coming away with another podium sweep. Standing atop the podium was redshirt senior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason), who placed first with a time of 8:24.65. Over the course of the two days, Raymond placed first in both the 3000m and 5000m, which ultimately earned him Most Valuable Performer honors. Right behind Raymond in the 3000m was redshirt senior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt), who earned silver with a time of 8:24.67, while redshirt senior Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis.- River Falls) placed third in 8:25.07.

Additionally, both relay teams came away with gold medals. The distance medley relay squad made up of Lenneman, freshman Dennis Manyeah (Darby, Pa.-Pennwood), senior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich.-Thomas J. Anderson), and Andresson ran to a finishing time of 10:03.09, while the 4x400 crew consisting of Johnson, junior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), Richardson, and Brown raced to a blistering time of 3:14.74.

Junior Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) paced the Eagles in the field events with a third-place finish in the triple jump. His distance of 14.71m gave him the bronze, which served as the lone medal earned by an Eagle in the field events.

The coaching duo of John Goodridge and Sterling Roberts catapulted the Eagles into success this regular season and conference championship. For their efforts, Goodridge earned MAC Head Coach of the Year, while Roberts was tabbed MAC Assistant Coach of the Year.
The Eagles will now wait and see if any individuals earned a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championships, which will be held in two weeks, March 9-10, down in College Station, Texas.
