BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team took two event titles in the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship Friday, Feb. 23 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Additionally, the meet saw 10 performances that qualified for tomorrow's medal races.

Redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) continued her incredible 2018 campaign by earning gold in the 5000m with a time of 16:35.47. Right behind her was teammate Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison), who captured silver by crossing the line in 16:35.54, just on the heels of Bogdanova.

The distance medley relay squad consisting of junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsvile, Ind.-Zionsville Community), freshman Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), and seniors Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium-Sportschool KA2) and Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) also took first with their strong collective performances, as the group finished with a time of 11:36.79.

Two members of that DMR squad will also participate in tomorrow's 800m finals race, as Wyns and Cizmas put together qualifying finishes, placing second and third, respectively.

As expected, a handful of Eagles earned a trip to the sprints event finals in tomorrow's scheduled action. In the 60m dash, junior Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell) paced EMU with a time of 7.50, with sophomore Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) clocking in at 7.62, as they each qualified for tomorrow's medal race. The 400m dash saw two more student-athletes put together performances which warrant a spot in tomorrow's finals race, as senior Jasmine Jones and sophomore Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) placed third and fourth with times of 56.00 and 56.18, respectively.

In the 60m hurdles, junior Ayanna O'Neal (Cincinnati, Ohio-Withrow) was the only hurdler out of EMU's three total representatives to stamp her ticket to tomorrow's main event, after she finished third with a time of 8.61.

Sophomore Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic) acted as the lone Eagle competing in the pentathlon. Her highest placement of the day came in the 800m run, where she notched fifth-place in 2:33.08. After the conclusion of each event, Salzbrunn finished 10th with a new personal-best score of 2985, an improvement over last year's mark by 21 points.

The Eagles finish out the conference championship tomorrow, Feb. 24, beginning at 10 a.m. with the heptathlon 60m hurdles. Field events pick back up at 11 a.m., while the running events are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. with the men's mile run.
