YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team has announced that the fifth annual Lead Off Dinner will take place Saturday, Feb. 9, beginning at 6 p.m. in the EMU Student Center Grand Ballroom. Check-in will commence at 5:30 p.m.
The event will help the EMU baseball team fund its spring trips, as well as other projects to help enhance the team's performance throughout the season. The Oestrike Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to its newest recipient, Gary Clark, during the event. There will also be a keynote speech delivered by former MLB player and World Champion, Willie Horton.
Horton played 17 years in the show, 14 of which he spent with the Detroit Tigers. His time as a member of the Tigers included the 1968 World Championship run, where he recorded the second-most homers in the American League (36), a .543 slugging percentage, and 278 total bases over the course of the season. Moreover, Horton played alongside some of Detroit's greats, including Al Kaline, Bill Freehan, and Denny McLain. During his career, Horton was a four-time All-Star, compiling 325 home runs and 1,163 RBIs, while holding a .273 batting average. Additionally, Horton earned the distinction of the AL's top designated hitter twice. For his outstanding accomplishments, Horton's No. 23 was retired by the Tigers and has remained within the organization, acting as a member of the front office since 2003.
Clark was a four-year letterwinner in both baseball and basketball for Eastern Michigan from 1961-64. Overall, he had an impressive career donning the Green and White, which culminated in leading the 1964 squad in ERA (3.39). Since his time as a student-athlete, Clark has immersed himself with the program, continuing to support and advocate for EMU baseball for over 50 years.
Individual tickets for the event start at $125, while kids 12 and under are just $25. There are also options to sponsor a student-athlete's meal for $35, as well as sponsoring a table, which includes four tickets and a special gift, for $1,000. Additionally, local businesses have the opportunity to become a program sponsor for $100.
