CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University football team had 12 student-athletes representing the Green and White on the 2018 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Football Team, the conference announced Monday, Dec. 17. The 12 Eagles on the list were tied with Kent State University and Miami University for the fifth-most out of all MAC institutions, as Western Michigan University led the conference with 20 selections.
Making the Academic All-MAC team were: senior Blake Banham (St. Paul, Minn.-Cretin-Durham), sophomore Jake Donnellon (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Gabriel Richard), senior Jeremiah Harris (Lambertville, Mich.-Bedford Senior), senior Jeremy Hickey (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice), junior Clay Holford (Carrollton, Texas-Hebron), junior Brody Hoying (Coldwater, Ohio-Coldwater), senior Tyler LaBarbera (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-James B. Banham was one of only four MAC student-athletes named as four-time selections to the team, as the St. Paul, Minn. native received the conference academic honor all four years of his Eastern playing career. Harris, Holford, Hoying, and Turner earned the selection for the third time, while Donnellon and Nielsen were selected for the second time while donning the Green and White. In total, 154 student-athletes earned the honor.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
From walk-on to team captain, Banham moved from running back to wide receiver for his senior season and it paid off with Third Team All-MAC accolades. Banham led the pass-heavy 2018 Eagles in receptions (60), receiving yards (758), and all-purpose yardage (83.7 ypg). The St. Paul, Minn. product has posted 100+ yards receiving three times this season, including a season-best 159 at Buffalo, Sept. 15, and ranks 10th in the league in receiving yards per game (58.3). A Google Cloud Academic All-District® honoree by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Banham also ranked second in the MAC and 22nd nationally with 10.0 yards per punt return.
Donnellon, an exercise major with a 3.45 GPA, played in all 13 games for the Eagles, earning three starts at Ball State (Oct. 20), against Army (Oct. 27), and versus Central Michigan (Nov. 3). He earned one start at right guard (BSU) and two at left guard (Army and CMU), aiding the Eagles' offensive line that marked the third-highest passing efficiency and fourth-best passing offense in the conference at 226.7 yards per game.
A two-time captain and leader of Eastern's defensive efforts, Harris started 12 of the team's 13 games this season. He racked up 64 tackles, including 7.5 for loss and five sacks en route to Third Team All-MAC honors. His five sacks are tied for 11th-most in the MAC. The Lambertville, Mich. native has also blocked a kick, intercepted a pass, forced a fumble, and recovered a fumble this season. Harris recorded a career-high 3.0 sacks in EMU's regular season finale at Kent State, Nov. 23, tying the program record for single-game sacks. Overall, Harris tied the EMU career record with seven forced fumbles and ranks fifth with 16.0 career sacks.
Hickey started all 13 games in 2018 for the Green and White, earning a 3.20 GPA as a social studies and history major. Named a candidate for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Wuerffel Trophy, the Bloomfield Hills, Mich. native was a huge part of EMU's offense that had the 32nd-best completion percentage in the nation.
A supply chain management major with a 3.58 GPA, Holford tallied 17 tackles and two quarterback hurries as a part of the Eastern defense. His best game came against Army West Point, Oct. 27, when he notched six tackles against the Black Knights. Overall, EMU ranked sixth in the nation when guarding the redzone with just 72.9 percent of trips inside the 20-yard line resulting in points.
Hoying, a three-time Academic All-MAC selection and two-time All-MAC selection, spent his junior season succeeding both on and off the field. The supply chain management major holds a 3.69 GPA, while also recording the fifth-most tackles of any Eagle student-athlete and 29th-most in the conference with 69 on the season. For his efforts, he earned Third-Team All-MAC recognition. Overall. Hoying's 8.5 tackles-for-loss ranked 10th in the league as EMU finished third nationally in fewest passing yards allowed at just 150.2 a contest.
Collecting the award for the first time, LaBarbera has a 3.36 GPA in exercise science. A staple of the EMU defensive line, he started nine of the 12 games he played in, while recording 42 tackles and a part of a TFL on the season. Against Army West Point's triple-option attack, LaBarbera filled the middle of the line for a career-high 11 tackles. He also added seven stops in an overtime contest against eventual MAC Champion Northern Illinois, Sept. 29
McGee III, a sport management major with a 3.34 GPA, had a standout sophomore season. The former walk-on tallied 18 tackles, along with an interception, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery. The Canton, Mich. product made appearances in all 13 games and recorded the game-saving poke-away against the University of Toledo, Oct. 13, on a two-point conversion attempt to tie the game in the final moments.

A 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® honoree by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Van Hoeven appeared in every game for the Eagles. A backup until recently, he has served on EMU's special teams unit as well.
