YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)- The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team opened its 2018-19 season with a win over Denison University, 156-133, Sat. Oct 20, at Jones Natatorium. Four members of the Green and White earned two-or-more event titles in the season-opening dual.
"I am really proud of the way we executed our races and competed today," noted Associate Head Coach Tracy Martin. "We saw a lot of great things that we can build on and also ways to make improvements."
Leading the way for Eastern was senior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville), who earned wins in the 200, 500, and 1000 Freestyle events, while fellow senior Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) clocked in the top times on both Breaststroke events. Junior Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) took home both of the dual meet's Backstroke titles, finishing more than seven seconds ahead of the competition. In addition, senior Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.-Hamilton) registered the top times in both the 50 and 100 Free.
The Eagles were equally as outstanding on the springboard, posting top scores in both sessions. Junior Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Canada-Catholique Franco-Quest) earned the 3-meter title, scoring 245.40, while senior Gabrielle Mace (Clinton, Mich.-Chippewa Valley) posted the top score on the 1-meter, with a 268.65.
EMU heads to Toledo, Ohio next Friday, Oct. 26, to open Mid-American Conference competition against the University of Toledo. The meet is set to start at 5 p.m.
