Eastern Maintains Perfect MAC Record With Win Over Miami

Oxford, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team secured its 13th consecutive Mid-American Conference dual win with a 169-131 victory over Miami University Saturday, Jan. 27. This marks the third consecutive season with an undefeated MAC record, as EMU now sits 4-0 in conference and 7-1 overall this year.
After a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay, junior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) continued her undefeated streak in the 1000 freestyle by claiming the top spot with a season-best time of 10:01.80. Senior Sarah Dombkowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) had a third-place finish with a time of 10:11.27.
After Swartz finished third in the 200 free, sophomores Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) and Claire Young (Grosse Pointe, Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) took the top two spots in the 100 back. Gavigan finished in first with a time of 55.70 while Young took second at 56.00.
Junior Delaney Duncan (Galesbug, Ill.-Galesburg) posted a first-place finish with a season-best time of 1:01.40 before junior Emilie Desnoyers (St. Albert, Alberta) was the top finisher for the Eagles in the 200 butterfly with a second-place finish at 2:03.96.
The Eagles swept the top two spots in the 50 free with junior Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.) posting a time of 23.89, good for first place. Senior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.-Landstown) took second-place with a time of 24.07.
One the springboard, senior Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) snagged a pair of second-place finishes in the 1- and 3-meter dives. In the 1-meter, Shereda posted a score of 280.57 for the silver before she posted a 307.65 in the 3-meter dive.
Transitioning back to the pool, freshman Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) finished first in the the 100 free with a season-best time of 51.71, before EMU earned its first sweep of the afternoon in the 200 back. Headed by Gavigan, junior Dora Vrcic (Dubrovacka, Split, Croatia) and Young took rounded out the sweep at second and third-place, respectively.
Duncan was the top finisher in the 200 breast as she finished with a blistering time of 2:16.64 before Dombkowski kept Eastern's winning streak alive in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.26.
The RedHawks took the top spots in the 100 fly and 200 IM, but Liberman and Vrcic took second and third in the events, respectively.
The Green and White concluded the meet with a first and third-place finish in the 400 yard free relay.
