Gutierrez Earns Scholar Athlete of the Week Honors

This is the sixth Scholar Athlete of the Week award this year for EMU
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University redshirt freshman wrestler Tomas Gutierrez (Arvada, Colo.-Pomona) earned Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 21, the league office announced Tuesday, Jan. 23.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0-or-better and performs well during the week's competition.
Gutierrez posted one of EMU's top performances in the Eagles' dominating, 30-3, win over Northern Illinois, Jan. 19. Gutierrez knocked off nationally ranked Brock Hudkins of NIU, who came into the match 19th in the country and first in the MAC, by decision, 5-3.
The redshirt freshman, who holds a 3.04 grade point average in business administration, improved his dual record to 5-6 in his first season as the primary starter at 125 lbs.
The Eagles remain at home but will have the next week off, getting back into action Friday, Feb. 2, when they take on the University at Buffalo. Action against the Bulls is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be a "Beauty and the Beast" meet with the gymnastics team.
