FULL RESULTS
ALMA, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team sent four unattached wrestlers to the 2018 Alma Open, Saturday, Jan. 20. They all came home with some hardware, as all four placed within the top-five of their respective weight classes, including freshman Tanner Smith (New Carlisle, Ohio-Mechanicsburg) who took the title at 149 lbs.
It was the fourth tournament title in four tries for the true freshman, who is now a perfect 17-0 in his redshirt season. The Ohio native was dominant in all of his matches, as he won his first two by technical fall and then by medical forfeit to advance to the finals. In the finals, he bested his opponent by major decision to take the crown. Smith now has a team-leading three technical falls on the season.
Elsewhere, the other unattached freshmen to place were Mason Kauffman (Stratford, Wis.-Stratford), who took second at 157 lbs., Kolin Leyrer (Holt, Mich.-Holt), who placed fourth at 165 lbs., and Dylan Powers (Saline, Mich.-Saline), who finished fifth at 197 lbs.
Kauffman won his first three matches, including one by technical fall and another by major decision, to get to the finals, where he was bested in a tiebreaker, 4-1. Leyrer finished his day 3-2, with two wins by decisions and a third by technical fall. Finally, Powers notched a pair of wins, including one via pin in 4:08.
The Eagles remain at home but will have the next week off, getting back into action Friday, Feb. 2, when they take on the University at Buffalo. Action against the Bulls is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be a "Beauty and the Beast" meet with the gymnastics team.
