The Manning Award recognizes the top college quarterback after bowls
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University redshirt senior Brogan Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Toledo St. John's Jesuit) has been named to the Manning Award Watch List, awarded to the top college quarterback after bowl games, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Wednesday, Aug. 16.
Roback is one of just 30 QBs named to the exclusive watch list. This nomination is his second preseason recognition after being named Second Team Preseason All-Mid-American Conference by Athlon Sports. He is also no stranger to the Manning Award, after he was named one of its Stars of the Week last season following a 347 yard and three-touchdown performance in the 27-20 win over Ohio.
The Ohio native is coming off his best season yet in the Green and White, throwing for 2,694 yards on 219 completions, to go along with 18 touchdowns. He was named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week three times, including after tossing a career-high 468 yards in EMU's win over Ball State, Nov. 8, to clinch bowl eligibility status.
For his storied EMU career, Roback comes in near the top in the Eastern record books for numerous categories, including ranking fifth in total offense (6,033), fourth in passing attempts (875), completions (500), and passing yards (5,763), and third in passing touchdowns (38).
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
Midseason additions to the Watch List will be announced on Thursday, Oct. 12. The list of 10 finalists will be released on Thursday, Nov. 30. The winner will be announced in the week following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In addition to the Manning Award's yearly honor, each week during the regular season, eight quarterbacks are recognized as Manning Quarterbacks of the Week. Sixty-one players from 59 different schools were honored during the 2016 season.
