EUGENE, ORE. (EMUEagles, com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team wrapped up another strong season today, June 10, in Eugene, Ore. at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Eagles brought home a second-place finish behind the efforts of senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83) in the finals of the 5000m.
"Alsu ran a spectacular race and I know that she surprised many people with her finish," exclaimed Head Coach Sue Parks. "She has been running very well this outdoor season and I knew that if she stayed close enough to the pack to use her speed, she would have a shot at placing well. The race played out perfectly for her and when she finally worked herself up to the main group with 600 meters to go, I had a feeling that she was capable of doing something really special. Alsu has amazing closing speed and she finished with a 64.5 last 400 to secure the runner-up spot. I'm really proud of her for being patient and having the confidence to work her way through the field before unleashing her kick. After such a great outdoor season and an incredible showing in this meet, it will be exciting to see what Alsu can do in her final year at Eastern."
Bogdanova took part in the finals of the 5000m, where she shined late in the race. The Kazan, Russia native held strong throughout the majority of the race, making a move late to jump up the standings. Ultimately, Bogdanova claimed second in the 5000, clocking in at 15:43.84 to finish second in the nation on the event. Not only was her time good enough for second at the NCAA Championships, but it also furthered her hold on the program record at EMU. Based on her finish, Bogdanova earned First Team All-American honors for the first time in her career.
With that, the Eagles concluded another impressive track & field season. At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, EMU had a pair of distance runners each compete very well on the national stage.
