NCAA East Regional Day Three Results
LEXINGTON, KY. (EMUEagles.com) – The NCAA East Regional came to an end today, May 27, with the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team wrapping up its time in Lexington, Ky. with two more competitors. Another distance runner punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships, as senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83) secured a championship spot in the 5000m.
"I was pleased with our showing at the regional meet," stated Head Coach Sue Parks. "The competition is extremely tough in this region and there is very little margin for error if you want to have a chance at qualifying for NCAA's. Jordann McDermitt and Alsu Bogdanova did an outstanding job of running smart races and securing their spots to Eugene. Natalie Uy finished her career at EMU in a great way as she had solid attempts at her personal best height in the vault. Dace Dreimane had a seasonal best in the triple jump and defeated two conference rivals who beat her in the MAC meet. Sydney Meyers and Jasmine Jones had outstanding track seasons and both learned valuable lessons in their first regional meet that will help them in the future. All of these athletes hold themselves to very high standards so you could always hope for more but I feel that we competed very well against some of the best athletes in the NCAA."
Yet another EMU distance runner had a fantastic performance, as Bogdanova qualified to the NCAA Championships for the second straight season in the 5000m by finishing in the top-five of her heat. Specifically, the Kazan, Russia native claimed second in the first heat, and ninth overall by clocking in at 16:28.20. Last season, she took 11th at the NCAA East Regional, marking an improvement of two places. Bogdanova will join fellow distance runner junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) at the national championships, as McDermitt qualified in the 10000m earlier this week.
Junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) had her best performance of the season in the triple jump. Dreimane finished third in the first flight, posting a season-best mark of 12.70 meters/ 41 feet 8-inches to claim 25th overall. The Ventspils, Latvia native was also just .10 meters away from the top-20, and .19 meters out of the top-15.
"We excited to have Jordann and Alsu represent our team at the NCAA finals in Eugene and I know that they will both be very motivated to compete hard and see what they can do at the very highest level," elaborated Parks.
This marks the conclusion of the NCAA East Regional, with the season wrapping up in two weeks at the NCAA Championships, June 7-10, in Eugene, Oregon.
