MANHEIM, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – For the third straight season, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team earned top-10 team academic honors, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced Tuesday, April 18. The Eagles finished the year with a team grade point average of 3.341, which was good for 10th in the nation.

The Green and White took top GPA honors in 2014-15, and finished 10th last year. The Eagles were one of five MAC schools to make the list, with Kent State finishing fourth, Central Michigan 15th, Old Dominion 22nd, and Ohio 27th.

EMU also had two individuals make the Division-I All-Academic Team, with redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) and redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) making the list.

Barber was the starter at 149 lbs. for EMU in his final season. The redshirt senior went 17-14 during the regular season, including 7-5 in duals. He took sixth place at the 2017 MAC Championships, and earned his second NCAA tournament appearance via an at-large bid. At nationals, his 10-1 major decision over Kyle Shoop of Lock Haven advanced him to the championship bracket, where he went two and out. For his EMU career, Barber finished with 82 victories, good for 10th on the all-time list. On the list for the fourth time of his career, Barber currently holds a 3.71 GPA in his Masters of Business Administration program.

Gonser led the Eagles at the 125-pound weight class, posting a 16-12 season record and a 7-4 mark in duals in his first season as the primary starter. During the regular season, he defeated three nationally ranked opponents, while being ranked in the top-20 of his weight class himself. Gonser earned his first appearance in the NCAA tournament with an at-large bid after placing 6th in the MAC Championships, becoming just the second EMU freshman since 1984 to compete in the national tournament. Gonser holds a 3.48 GPA in his interdisciplinary environmental science program.

Awarded annually, the NWCA All-Academic team is comprised of 135 student-athletes. Four Division I champions made the team, while six additional runners-up were included. In all, 35 All-Americans were All-Academic selections. Of the 135 individuals, 115 wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division I championships, up from 101 last season and an increase of 19 since 2014-15.

The team GPA was determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program.  A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier.
