Akron Sweeps Eagles in Sunday Afternoon Dual

EMU managed just one doubles win in the 7-0 setback
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- On the opening weekend of the 2017 Mid-American Conference tennis season, Eastern Michigan University's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision at the hands of the University of Akron Sunday afternoon, March 26. The Eagles (6-10, 1-1 MAC) dropped their first conference contest of the season after defeating Bowling Green, March 24. For the Zips (17-2, 2-0 MAC), they picked up their second MAC win in as many matches.
The match began with doubles play, where the Green and White dropped a pair of matches. Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) were the only squad to walk away with a victory as they defeated Adriana Blinova and Sophia Geier, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles.
The Zips swept EMU in singles play, taking all but two matches in straight sets. At No. 3 singles, Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) forced a third set but eventually fell, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0, to UA's Rita Pedroso, while Ribero took Karolina Maksimova to three sets but dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 final.
The Green and White returns to action Friday, March 31, when it hosts Northern Illinois University. Weather permitting, the match will be played at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex at 1 p.m. Should inclement weather arise, the match will take place at the Chippewa Racquet Club.
