Freshman Devin Hager had a two-hit, two-RBI game
FRESNO, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team battled all the way, but ultimately fell in the series finale to Fresno State, 6-3, Sunday afternoon, March 12, at Bob Bennett Stadium.
A pair of Eagles (3-13) had two-hit days, including freshman Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), who wrapped up his productive offensive weekend with a 2-for-3 day including two RBI's and a walk. Fellow freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) also notched a two-hit performance, his third of the season.
The first inning went scoreless before Fresno (8-6) got one in each of the second and third innings to lead it 2-0 into the fourth inning.
Leading off the fourth, senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) ripped a double, and advanced to third on a wild throw on a play at second. One batter later, redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) was able to drive the run home with a sacrifice fly to cut it to 2-1.The Eagles went on to tie it after a walk from freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and back-to-back singles from Jones and Hager, the latter an RBI knock, tied the ball game heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Fresno State was able to respond immediately, regaining a three-run lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on five hits and an error to take the 5-2 advantage after four frames. One more Bulldog run came around in the fifth, making the tally 6-2 into the sixth.
The Eagles were not able to get anything going offensively over the next three innings, but solid pitching efforts from sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) and senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) kept FS off the board in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to maintain the score into the ninth.
In the ninth inning, EMU threatened after a lead off hit by pitch came around on a two-out single from Hager, but Fresno was able to lock down the three-run victory to take the weekend series.
The Eagles will have the midweek off before heading south once again for a three-game weekend series against Samford University. The first game in Birmingham is set for a 5 p.m. first pitch, Friday, March 17.
