EMU won the first four bouts of the night before losing the final six
BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team won the first four bouts of the day, but were defeated in the final six matchups, eventually falling to the University at Buffalo, 20-12, Friday night at Alumni Arena.
Eastern (5-6, 1-5 MAC) had a promising start, winning the first four matchups by decision, before the Bulls (9-4, 3-2 MAC) won the next six, including five by decision and one by technical fall, to take the dual. Three of the four EMU wins came with riding time points.
The dual began at 141 lbs. where redshirt junior No. 33 Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) got things started with a stout 9-4 decision. Leading 4-2 after one, Springer got a stall call in period two to take a 5-3 lead into the third. An escape, third takedown, and riding time locked up the decision and the 3-0 lead. It was his third straight dual win and moved him to 7-3 in duals on the season.
Redshirt senior No. 27 Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) kept things rolling with a dominating 9-3 decision over No. 29 Colt Cotten. He racked up four first period points as well, with a takedown and two-point nearfall, to lead 4-1 after one. Two takedowns later in the bout put him up 8-3, and riding time sealed the 9-3 win without giving up a takedown.
The 157 lbs. match was a tighter battle for redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake), who had a 1-1 deadlock to start the third period. With both wrestlers taking shots, Carson got a huge takedown with a little over a minute left and held on after the escape for the 3-2 decision. He moved to 5-1 in duals on the season, and gave EMU an early 9-0 lead after three.
Eastern made it four straight wins with a great bout win from redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) over No. 4 ranked MAC wrestler Tyler Rill. The veteran had two takedowns, a reversal, an escape, and riding time to win with relative ease, 8-4, and make the team score 12-0 in favor of the Green and White.
Buffalo got on the board at 174 lbs. with a 5-0 decision, cutting the lead to 12-3 midway through the match. The 184 lbs. match was a virtual deadlock, going to sudden victory, before Buffalo got a decisive reversal right before the final buzzer to make it two straight wins, and a team score of 12-6.
UB notched another decision at 197 lbs., making it a three-point match, 12-9, going into a premiere bout at heavyweight. Nationally ranked opponents squared off with No. 28 Jake Gunning of Buffalo coming out on top of redshirt junior No. 17 Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) by 7-2 decision to tie it at 12 with just two matches to go.
It was another nationally ranked match at 125 lbs. where redshirt freshman No. 17 Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) squared off with No. 32 Kyle Akins. The match was almost sealed in the first period, as a scramble left Gonser facing a 6-0 defict. Gonser could not secure a takedown the rest of the way, and fell, 6-1.
The Bulls capped off the comeback with a 25-4 technical fall at 133 lbs., and took the dual with a final score of 20-12.
The Eagles get back to the mats on Sunday, Feb. 5, for a dual against the Kent State Golden Flashes. Action from the MAC Center in Kent, Ohio is set for noon.
