Baseball Falls Short in Series Finale Versus Missouri

2/19/2017 2:31:00 PM | Baseball

Junior Brad Allen struck out six in his EMU debut

FT. MYERS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came up short in a 7-2 defeat to the University of Missouri, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 19 at City of Palms Park. EMU's (1-3) pitchers kept them in the contest most of the game, but the bats were unable to generate enough offense.

Junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) took the tough loss in his solid EMU debut. The righty went five innings, giving up three earned runs along with six strikeouts. The Eagle bats were led by junior Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), who had his third two-hit game of the weekend. Redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) also collected a double in a 2-for-4 game.

For the first time all weekend, it was Missouri (3-1) who struck first, getting a run in the first inning on three hits. With the bases loaded, Allen was able to avoid any more damage, getting back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam.

The Tigers tacked on another in the second on three more hits to lead it 2-0 after two innings. The trend continued in the third, as MU got another run after a triple and a wild pitch. Despite the runs, Allen racked up five K's through the first three innings.

EMU broke through in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on a leadoff walk. Senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) drew the free pass on a full count, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He was brought home on a single up the middle by redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert, C.C.)). Peterson was then advanced to third after a bunt and groundout, and he was knocked home on an RBI single from sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) to get Eastern within one, 3-2.

The lead went back to two in the bottom half of the inning, as the Tigers capitalized on an EMU throwing error on a potential double play ball. Later in the inning, the bases were loaded again, but Allen worked his way out of another jam with his sixth strikeout to keep the two-run deficit into the late innings.

Following a scoreless sixth, Mizzou got some insurance in the seventh with a run that scored on a bases loaded sacrifice fly. With two turns at the bat remaining, EMU trailed by three, 5-2. A golden opportunity presented itself in the eighth, as EMU loaded up the bags with two outs after a walk and back-to-back infield singles, but a popup ended the threat.

Missouri got two more in the bottom of the eighth to pad the lead to 7-2 going into Eastern's final time at the plate. The Eagles had nothing doing there, sealing the 7-2 defeat.

Eastern will remain in Ft. Myers this week for a midweek contest against Florida Gulf Coast University. First pitch against the Eagles is set for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22.
