EMU managed just one singles win
LINCOLN, Neb. (EMUEagles) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team traveled to Lincoln, Neb. to square off with the University of Nebraska Friday, Feb. 10, at the Dillon Tennis Center. The Eagles (1-6) dropped its third straight match, while the Cornhuskers (6-0) remained undefeated after their 6-1 win over EMU.
The Eagles struggled in doubles play. Juniors Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) fell to Nebraska's Vasanti Shinde and Claire Reifeis, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles before juniors Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) teamed up but dropped a match to Lisa Andersson and Hayley Haakenstad, 6-4, in third position. The two doubles losses gave EMU an early 1-0 defict heading into singles action.
The Green and White struggled in singles play, winning just one match. Sophomore Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) was the bright spot for the Eagles in singles play. The Krmelin, Czech Republic native fell behind after a 6-4 loss in the first set, but responded with a 6-4 win over her own before winning the third set tiebreaker to get her third victory at No. 1 singles in dual play this season.
"We competed well in spots today," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We got a slow start in doubles that made the difference. I'm impressed with Marie's play at the top of the lineup. She is starting to play well. We will get ready and be fired up from the start against Creighton tomorrow."
The Eagles return to action Saturday, Feb. 11, when they remain in Lincoln to square off with Creighton University. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
