EMU swept doubles play before winning three singles matches
LINCOLN, Neb. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team broke a three-match losing streak Saturday, Feb. 11, when it traveled to the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb. to defeat Creighton University, 4-3. The Eagles (2-6) swept doubles play before taking three-of-four singles matches from the Bluejays (2-3).
In doubles play, the Green and White came away victorious in all three contests. Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) teamed up with Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) to defeat Ashley Ishimura and Darby Rosette, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 squad of Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) knocked off Claire Embree and Hylan Miller, 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) won a tough fought 7-5 matchup against Kendra Lavallee and Michaela Henne.
Moving on to singles play, Mayerova was able to top Ishimura, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1, while Gogvadze swept Rosette, 6-4, 6-3, in the second singles slot. The final and decisive victory came when Barcelo walked away from the court with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Lavallee in the No. 6 position to give the Eagles their second victory of the 2017 dual season.
"We literally limped to a victory today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "I'm relieved to get the win, but we can do a lot better and be healthier. We will get to work on that this week."
The Green and White return to action Friday, Feb. 17, when EMU hosts University Northwestern Ohio at the Chippewa Racquet Club. The Eagles and Racers hit the court at 1 p.m.
