LAS VEGAS (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team returns to the mats this weekend, Friday-Saturday, Dec. 1-2, for the 2017 Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas. The two-day tournament begins tomorrow at noon Eastern Time.
The Cliff Keen Invite is one of the premier early season tournaments, as proven by the level of competition. A total of 38 Division I teams will be in attendance, including 16 of the 25 National Wrestling Coaches Association ranked teams. These include No. 2 Ohio State, No. 8 Minnesota, No. 9 Michigan, No. 10 Virginia Tech, No. 12 Arizona State, No. 13 Nebraska, No. 14 Cornell, No. 16 Northern Iowa, No. 18 Wisconsin, No. 19 Central Michigan, No. 20 Purdue, No. 21 Oklahoma, No. 22 Rider, No. 23 Edinboro, No. 24 Pittsburgh, and No. 25 Stanford.
In addition, over 100 of the individual wrestlers are ranked by national outlets, including redshirt senior heavyweight Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), who is as high as 16th in the country. With his national ranking, Hutchison is the lone Eagle ranked in the tournament pre-seeds, coming in at No. 8 in the heavyweight bracket. The veteran is coming off the first Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week award of his career, and is 7-2 to start the season, including four straight pins.
The tournament is formatted to have each team wrestle just one athlete per weight class. The Eagles' 10 grapplers are as follows:
