Rain Shortens EMU Tennis' Weekend at UB Invitational

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team returned to action in its fall season at the University at Buffalo Invitational, battling with five other teams and the weather in the Eagles' final tune-up before the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional next weekend.

Senior Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) came out as the winner of the "Ranch" Draw, defeating her opening round opponent from Duquesne, 7-5, 6-2 and fellow Mid-American Conference member Bowling Green, 6-3, 6-3 in round two. Her championship victory came over another Duquesne adversary, by a 6-4, 6-3 final.

Because of inclement weather throughout the weekend in New York, not all of the event's backdraws were completed.

Junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic), senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani), and senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) each won their first backdraw match after falling in their openers. None of their backdraws were completed.

After a successful opening weekend in doubles play, the lone win of the weekend in doubles action came from the combination of Mayerova and Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School). Their victory came over Bowling Green in the "Hot" backdraw after falling to Buffalo in their opening match.

Eastern Michigan finishes its fall season at the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by the University of Michigan, Oct. 12 and 13.
