Mayerova and Almonya combined to go 3-1 in doubles flight
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team took part in its first competition of the 2017-18 season, traveling to Bloomington, Ind. to take part in the Hoosier Classic, hosted by Indiana University.
The three day event kicked off Friday, Sept. 29 and ran through Sunday, Oct. 1. The Eagles had six individuals and three doubles teams compete against opponents from the University of Cincinnati, host Indiana University, Eastern Kentucky University, and Western Michigan University.
Eastern's pairing of Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) had the most successful weekend in doubles, going 3-1 with wins over Eastern Kentucky (8-6), Western Michigan(8-6), and Indiana (8-1). Their lone loss came at the hands of Western Michigan, 8-3.
Also teaming up for the weekend was Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Anna Valeva (Sofia, Bulgaria), who picked up an 8-6 win over Western Michigan and went 1-3 overall. Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) went 0-4 in the Hoosier division, falling to two Indiana duos as well as a pair from Cincinnati and another from Eastern Kentucky.
Highlighting the singles competition for the weekend were Almonya and Valeva, who each went 1-2 in their three matches. Almonya defeated her opponent from Eastern Kentucky 7-6, 6-0, while Veleva defeated her adversary from Eastern Kentucky as well, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
"It was good to get our first competition under our belts," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "It really gave me a chance to get to know our team better and to learn how they compete in a match situation. We were able to get some nice wins on day two and Alejandra really gave us everything she had this weekend and was rewarded with some really encouraging results."
"We learned that we have some things to clean up and improve on, but we are looking to get right back to work at the UB Invite this weekend."
