Eastern returns home to the Convocation Center Friday, Oct. 20 against Akron
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was swept (16-25, 33-35, 26-28) on the road Saturday evening by Miami University at Milett Hall.
Junior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) once again led the Eagles in kills with 14, and registered another double-double thanks to 10 kills. Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) led the team with 27 assists and 20 digs for her sixth straight double-double and finished with a season-high five kills.
Eastern's offense struggled to get going in the first set, falling behind Miami early and never recovering in set one. The Redhawks rallied off a 10-2 run early in the set and the Eagles were never able to recover. Miami finished the set with five more kills and three more aces than EMU, and hit a blistering .342.
Eastern Michigan bounced back from the rough first set showing with a stellar effort in the second. After trailing by as many as six points, the Eagles rallied back and tied the game at 23-23. The two squads traded points the rest of the way, with the game finally finishing with Miami on top, 35-33. The set was the highest point total of the season in an EMU match.
Set three saw the Eagles respond well after a difficult set two defeat. EMU grabbed an early lead but was unable to withstand the ferocious Miami comebacks, eventually succumbing to the Redhawks by a final score of 28-26.
EMU's defense shined once again, finishing the match with even with Miami in digs (71 each) and doubling up the Redhawks in blocks (10 to five). Unfortunately, the offense was unable to find its groove, hitting just .155 and finishing with 43 kills compared to Miami's .209 attack percentage and 55 kills.
