Eagles Drop 5-2 Decision to Duquesne

Marie Mayerova and Anna Veleva each grabbed singles wins in the loss
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team continued the 2017 dual season with a match against Duquesne University Saturday night, Jan. 28, at the Franklin Athletic Club. After defeating Oakland University 6-1 earlier in the day, the Eagles (1-4) were knocked off by the Dukes (3-1), 5-2 in Southfield, Mich.
The match began with doubles play as Duquesne's Julianne Herman and Kylie Isaacs defeated Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School), 6-3, in the No. 1 spot, while Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) fell to Aishwarya Kona and Laurel Shymansky, 6-1, at No. 3, to fall behind 1-0.
Mayerova and Veleva were the shining spots in singles play. Mayerova took down Isaacs, 7-5, 7-6, at No. 1, while Veleva defeated Ally Miller, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 4 singles position. Martinovska dropped a straight set match to Herman, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2, while Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) fell 6-3, 7-6, to Duquesne's Zuzanna Stelmaszak in the third position. At No. 5, Konoa defeated Sharma quickly, 6-0, 6-2, while Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) was dispatched by Laurel Shymansky, 6-1, 6-0.
"Duquesne is a tough match at the back end of a doubleheader, but I liked the challenge for our team," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "I've seen some good improvements today that we can build on moving forward."
The Eagles are back in action Friday, Feb. 3, when they travel to Louisville, Ky. for a match with the Cardinals from the University of Louisville. The Green and White will square off with Louisville at 3 p.m.
