YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team put up a great fight, but ultimately fell short, 22-12, in dual action against No. 9 Missouri Sunday afternoon, Jan. 15, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles (5-3, 1-2 MAC) won four bouts, but the strength of the Tigers (8-2, 5-0 MAC) was too much to overcome.

All four of Eastern's match victories came by decision, while the major difference in team score came by Missouri wining four of their six bouts by major decision.

The dual started at the top with the premier matchup of the day between No. 19 redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) and No. 17 Barlow McGhee. Gonser started in a 4-2 hole after one, giving up two takedowns. The redshirt freshman rode out the second period though, giving him riding time into the third. In the final period, he got a clutch takedown near the end of the period to tie it. With the riding time, he had the lead, and after two penalty points, Gonser took the 7-4 decision. It was Gonser's third win over a ranked opponent this season and moved his record to 13-5 and 5-2 in duals.

At 133 lbs., the match started well for redshirt freshman Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson), as he used a pair of takedowns to lead 4-2, but No. 15 Jaydin Eierman controlled the rest of the match to take a 17-4 major decision, and give Missouri a 4-3 lead. The Tigers lead extended to 8-3 after 141 lbs. with another major decision, 18-8 to put it at 8-3 after three.

The Tigers drove the lead to 11-3 at the 149 lbs. bout, as No. 4 Lavion Mayes of Mizzou took care of business with an 8-5 decision. Redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) put up a great fight grabbing the early, 2-1, edge with a takedown, but Mayes recovered and controlled the rest of the match.  Missouri won its fourth in a row at 157 lbs. by 10-4 decision and midway through, the Tigers had a commanding 14-3 advantage.

Missouri's streak went to five at 165 lbs. as No. 7 Daniel Lewis did not give up a single point on his way to a 12-0 major decision, making the team score 18-3 with four weight classes to go. Another major decision at 174 lbs. put the dual out of reach for the Eagles, as the Tigers took a 22-3 lead with only three weight classes remaining.

The Eagles broke the streak at 184 lbs. when redshirt sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) worked out a 4-3 decision. The Illinois native went down 2-1 early, but notched his own takedown to lead 3-2. An escape tied the score, but MacCallum's third period escape put him ahead, where he would stay after defending several shots, securing the decision, and getting EMU back on the board, 22-6. The win moved his dual record to 4-3 on the season.

Redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) kept the momentum rolling for Eastern at 197 lbs, as he picked up a 4-1 decision. Hillman only gave up an escape, as his takedown, escape and over two minutes of riding time secured the victory and the 22-9 team score going into heavyweight. Hillman moved to 5-2 in duals this season.

No. 14 heavyweight redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) ended the dual on a high note with Eastern's third straight victory. The score was a scoreless stalemate after two periods, but Hutchison began the third on bottom and quickly got the escape. A takedown a little later made the score 3-0, and he rode out the rest of the period to get the riding time point for the 4-0 decision. It was his 21st win of the season, and he moved to 7-1 in dual action this year.

Eastern will get back into action next weekend for its first MAC road dual of the season, Friday, Jan. 20, against Northern Illinois. The dual from DeKalb, Ill. is set to begin at 8 p.m.
