Youngstown State defeated EMU 4-3 in the first dual of 2017

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team fell in its opening dual match of the 2017 campaign. The Eagles (0-1) fell, 4-3, after a hard fought dual with Youngstown State University.

The Green and White fell in doubles play despite winning its No. 1 doubles match, 6-4. Marie Mayerova and Andrea Martinovska defeated Dominika Lackova and Ana Stroe, however both the No. 2 and 3 doubles teams were unable to pickup wins, dropping the doubles point and falling behind, 1-0.

The Eagles were able to pickup wins at the No. 4-6 positions in singles play, but unable to grab a victory outside of those positions and fell, 4-3. Anna Veleva was able to defeat Stroe, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, and Maria Paula Ribero grabbed a 7-5, 7-5 at No.5 over Imaan Hassim. Finally, Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna notched a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 6, defeating  Cassandra Moraleja.

"Tough loss to start the year," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. " We knew we would have to bring our best, as Youngstown is an NCAA tournament team from last year.  We didn't execute the match points we had in doubles successfully.  This was a big difference in the match.  It was great to see Ribero and Barcelo back in action after long layoffs from injury.  We need to improve each day to win these level of matches.  Youngstown earned it today."

The Green and White returns to action Sunday, Jan. 15. The Eagles will square off with Marshall in Huntington, W. Va. at 11 a.m.
