Eagles Grounded by Fort Wayne on the Road

Samantha Falco recorded a career-high eight blocks in the loss
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team traveled to Fort Wayne, Ind. to square off with the Fort Wayne Mastodons Tuesday night, Sept. 6. The Eagles (2-5) dropped a three-set match, 20-25, 22-25, 19-25, at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
Offensively, the Green and White struggled, hitting at just a .092 percentage, while Fort Wayne (3-4) connected at a .226 clip. Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont (Austin Peay)) and Alysa Sutton (Gaston, Ind.-Wes-Del) led EMU with six kills apiece. On the defensive end, the Eagles saw Samantha Falco (Antioch, Ill.-Antioch Community) pickup a career-best eight blocks, while both Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and Sutton each grabbed 12 digs.
Sutton started out hot for the Eagles with four kills and seven digs in the first set. Rachel Irbe (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central) posted three kills, while Ferguson and Rajewski tallied a pair. The Green and White were unable to match Fort Wayne's strong offense, falling 25-20 in the opening frame.
The Eagles managed just 10 kills in the second set, including four from Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) and three from Falco. Rajewski collected eight digs in the frame but EMU could only tally an .077 attack percentage, while the Mastodons put up a .143 hitting clip to take the second set, 25-22.
In the final set of the match, Fort Wayne was able to hit at an astounding .333 attack percentage, while the Eagles managed to record a .129 clip. The Green and White ended up falling, 25-19, in the final frame dropping its fourth-straight match this year.
Eastern returns to action Friday, Sept. 9, when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to square off with Charleston Southern University at 4:30 p.m. The match with CSU is the first of three for EMU at the College of Charleston Classic.
