Eagles Finish Up Day One of Wildcat Invitational

Eastern walked away with three doubles wins

EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team completed day one of the Wildcat Invitational Friday, Sept. 30. The Eagles traveled to Evanston, Ill. to take part in the tournament hosted by Northwestern University and came away with a trio of victories in the first day of competition.

In doubles play, junior Andrea Martinovska paired up with sophomore Marie Mayerova for a pair of matches. The Czech Republic natives dropped a tight opening match to Adorabol Huckleby and Carin Ruenfelt from the University of Iowa, before topping Melika LeBlanc and Georgie Sanders, 6-2. EMU junior Ani Gogvadze and redshirt junior Maria Paula Ribero teamed up in a pair of matches but ultimately fell, 6-1, in each of those contests. Despite dropping their first match, 6-2, juniors Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna and Anna Veleva were able to knock off Norte Dame's Jeannie Nash and Hayden Siegfried, 6-4.

The Green and White were swept in singles play during day one. Veleva did move forward with a bye.

Day two of the Wildcat Invitational begins Saturday, Oct. 1. First serve of doubles play is set for 9 a.m.
