Eastern Completes Opening Weekend at Gopher Invitational

The Eagles had three wins in the final day
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) -- In the final day of the 2016 Gopher Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team competed in a pair of doubles matches, while playing in three singles contests. The Eagles went 3-2 overall on the final day of opening weekend.
Action started with doubles as Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic / Sport and Management School) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) teamed up to knock off Milwaukee's Eszter Zador and Labina Petrovska, 6-3, while Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) took on Minnesota's Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei but fell, 6-3.
In singles play, both Gogvadze and Mayerova came away with victories. Gogvadze knocked off Minnestoa's Maja Vujic, 7-5, 6-4, while Mayerova defeated Molly Crum from South Dakota State, 6-1, 6-4. Martinovska was the final decision in singles play. The Plzn, Czech Republic native fell, 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (12), at the hands of Iowa State's Annabella Bonadonna.
The Green and White return to action Sept. 30-Oct. 2 when the Eagles travel to Evanston, Ill. to take part in the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University. Stay tuned to EMUEagles.com for updates on the schedule of the Wildcat Invite.
